Audi e-Tron to have rotary generator.
As seen on the E-Tron concept at the Geneva show, the new Audi hybrid is getting a Mazda designed rotary engine to power it's generator.
A small rotary that is designed to only operate at one specific speed can be very efficient, compact and reliable. Mounted under the rear seat, flat, it is a single (250cc) rotor Mazda design - although Audi owns the original Wankel patents from it's amalgamation with NSU in 1969, it never perfected the technology (that's a nice way of saying it!) and will be licensing Mazda's developments. Felix would be proud that his motor still has 'legs'! |
That's cool!
I want my 250cc engine to power my lawnmower... It would be fun if it could be purchased as a spare from audi lol :) |
Der Spiegel article on Audi Wankel/Electric, 3 Jan 10
For those who can read German or want to look at the pictures:
http://www.spiegel.de/auto/aktuell/0...737483,00.html Highlights: (1) Audi has solved the rotary's "seal problem", with minimal mention of Mazda in the main article. :scratchhe (2) Single rotor, mounted under the trunk floor (3) 5000 rpm constant-speed, 65 kg (143 lb) weight, no mention of HP. (4) Chevy Volt style hybrid, plugin, electric motor drive, ICE charged when needed. (5) 50 km all electric range + another 200 km gasoline-assisted (6) 45 gm/km carbon emission (7) 1.9 l/100 km fuel consumption (124 mpg). (8) Production forseen for 2013. The mpg and carbon emissions are determined by a method they refer to, but such things are "fluid" as we all know. |
Huh, interesting.

Das fast schon vergessene Motorenkonzept?...... Booooo :icon_no2:
That is a pretty cool idea though. I wanna see what winds up happening with it |

merged Hi-Flite's and Stealth's threads into one.
This was shown first at Frankfurt in 2009. Geneva is March this year :) Along with the next Mazda concept this will be an excellent show to keep an eye on ;) http://www.spiegel.de/images/image-9...eryV9-qpnn.jpg |

Single-Piston rotary?

WTH is a single-piston rotary engine? o_O

I was at the NAIAS yesterday in Detroit. Since it was an "industry day" sans crowds, I took some time to chat with an Audi rep. Yes, the E-Tron is real, scheduled for late 2011 or early 2012 production, in limited numbers. He pointed out that they had 3 distinct flavors of it, and it hasn't been make clear which of the three has gotten the nod. However, he seemed pretty sure it was going the be the rotary version.

Good to know, i need a new citycar :)
Anyway what I find interesting is that that kind of wankel generator will probably be a good testing mule for some issues we have with our units. Low rpms and lack of different loads really increase the carbon build-up. Oil injection... Do you imagine an audi owner checking the dipstick and filling up? This could be a great reference to the progresses made in wankel technology by mazda before releasing the 16x. |

I was not referring to Audi adding something useful. In my opinion that engine running at constant, low, rpms will be a good test platform to see how Mazda worked to resolve some known issues: carbon buildup and seals\housings lubrication.
Maybe i didn't express myself well enough the first time :) |
single piston rotary makes it sound it has less than 100hp...
|
15kw
