my issue with the home made ramps pictured above is that there is no lip that will catch the back half of the tyre once it is on. To me that lip is just a little insurance against the car rolling back off of the ramps; not something to bet your life on (been there) but every little bit helps

I assume you have used your ramps, how do you feel the height is? Do you wish it could have been higher?

I'm sure you've thought of this... but you wouldn't be able to use 4 of the design shown earlier by simply driving up them. The rear wheels would be limited to going as high as what you can fit under your car. That design is well above the clearance of a stock RX-8. I really can't think of a reason to have 4 ramps unless you're just aiming to get the car slightly off the ground on all 4 corners. After that, using a jack to fit something like jack stands (or wooden platforms, as you might prefer) would be more effective.

As for the lip... you could easily add something that would be more effective than the typical lip found on a set of ramps.
