personally I would get a Pantera GTS

DynamicDookie 09-07-2005 03:46 PM

my friend has a vr-4 and it needs constant work. its a fast car, but I think they may have overenginered it... too many sophisticated features/parts: active aero, active suspension, 4 wheel steering.. and the parts are way pricey if you can find them. Also, I think the turbos are on the bottom.

This seems too good to be true, but this would be my dream 90's sports car.

I'd hit it!

I saw that ebay auction too! I wish I had 22k lying around :rolleyes:
The VR4 is an awesome dragster with the right modifications. Like everyone else said it has a few weak points. But it looks awesome and is fast as hell. I just think there are other options that could be just as good/maybe better for about the same amount of money. :confused:

I know from experience that a stock 280hp LT1 F-body is a bit faster in the 1/4 mile than the stock 320hp VR-4. 3-400 pounds makes a large impact. For equal mod $ the result is about the same. Looks are subjective, but if your looking for simply a fast car I'd go LS1 f-bod. 22k would net you the car + an easy couple hundred extra ponies, with money to spare. And with a couple grand thrown at the suspension, the F-body handles pretty well, if a bit twitchy.

AQA101 09-08-2005 12:02 AM

Nice car, but I'd go for a Supra.

Smoke Honda 09-08-2005 01:04 AM

These are all the Supras listed within 300 miles from my area. Most of them are fake i.e. the 5995 and 15999 ones. The others are way overprice.

Pontiac GTO VS. Mitsubishi GTO

Look what I learned!!

1999 Mitsubishi GTO VR4 (3000GT VR4)
3.0L Twin Turbo 6-Cylinder
320HP
315TQ
6-Speed Manual
3780Lbs
AWD
0-60- 5.3 Seconds
1/4 Mile- 13.8@100.3MPH

2004 Pontiac GTO
5.7L 8-Cylinder
350HP
365TQ
6-Speed Manual
3730Lbs
RWD
0-60- 5.3 Seconds
1/4 Mile 13.8@104.1MPH

Whoa, about the same ain't it?!

Except that the pontiac has "books" of engine mods available, with prices being significantly cheaper then the VR4's.

BlueEyes 09-08-2005 11:05 AM

You can also get a 2004 GTO for about 2k more than that VR4 is going for. It will have way less miles, a warranty, as said many many mods available cheap, more comforts etc.

DreRX8 09-08-2005 11:11 AM

I used to have a 99 3000GT SL--heavy, slow, front wheel drive. Looked good though. The VR4 has balls but way to heavy--not a fun car to drive, its not tossable. It cost more to mod those than the other competing imports too--it never had a big aftermarket compared to other cars.

RX8-79 09-08-2005 05:47 PM

Go for it. The '99 VR4 is extremely rare, and looks about 1000x better than that hideous supra thing or boring ass zx. The only thing to call itself a sports car from japan that looks as good is the RX7.

ferragame 09-09-2005 06:10 AM

Like everyone else said HEAVY and TERRIBLE brakes. I test drove one a few years ago and after two hard stops from like 80 the brakes were smoking and then just totally faded out. They smelled like a burning rat. The brakes are large size wise but just can't seem to handle the weight. After the test, I would never own one - just on the brakes alone.

I like the style but the weak points are too large and expensive to ignore.

I like the Supra power/mod wise but hate the back end.

So I bought a 93 FD. LOVED IT.

Smoke Honda 09-10-2005 11:35 AM

I think I came up with what I want to buy. I'm leaning towards a bike, a used Yamaha R6 to be exact. I'll be starting driving class in a couple of weeks. That'll take two days and then I'll start my hunt for a bike. Wish me luck! DO IT!!!

playdoh43 09-10-2005 11:54 AM

good luck, r6 is my fav in its class

VikingDJ 09-11-2005 09:16 AM

If you want a good collector car, and a cool cruiser, then you can't go wrong. If you want a pure nimble fun car, then I don't see why you'd get one. It is like the RX8 in the fact that it's a hot looking car. People buy the RX8 for that reason, and throw out the fact that the car is lacking power and torque, so why write off this car based on the fact that it's heavy, and not nimble? I guess price would be the only justifiable reason. Other then that, this car is hot looking, and FAST as hell. As for cost of maintaining, that's a risk you take with an older car, and something people in a few years will be taking with all the old, used rx8s floating around. The difference is, a 99 Vr4 is a collecter car, and it's not gonna drop in value nearly as fast anymore. I love the 3000GT. If I could afford to build a garage and be a mini ay Leno, I'd own one right now. :)

Smoke Honda 09-11-2005 10:14 AM

I know what you're talking about viking. I probaly just want it because I "just do". I probaly never could get one anytime soon because most of the VR4 drivers and dealers wouldn't let me have a test drive for soem reason. But it's one of the cars I would love to own one day. My daily routine consist of a walk to the train station and back, and when I drove the 8 during the weekends, it was just in traffic. I did race the occasional riced civic, but that's the closest I got to the "twisties" factor of the 8. I know I wasn't going to take the VR4 to it's limits probaly ever but just it's there just makes me feel pretty good :) .

BaronVonBigmeat 09-11-2005 10:59 AM

I always thought the 3000GT's were fat bloated gadgetmobiles, the polar opposite of the RX-7. Let's play a game called "Which One Doesn't Belong?":

* Twin turbo 4-valve 4-cam V6
* AWD
* 4-wheel steering
* Active aerodynamics (wtf)
* 320 HP
* 3800 lbs.
* Made by Mitsubishi
* Reliable, dependable daily driver

If I were shopping for a 90's sportscar, I think I'd try and find a LS1 powered FD personally.

Smoke Honda 09-11-2005 11:39 AM

Hmmmm............is it #8? I'm already set on buying a bike tho lol. Every since I brought the FX35, my lady all of a sudden thinks it's a good idea that I get a bike. Wierd lol.

BlueRenesis82 09-11-2005 04:44 PM

I agree with Baron, except for the part of LS1, I much prefer a single turbo FD
