88' 89' 90' differences Rx7
I was wondering what the frame work differences were for the FC model RX7 with the year 88' 89' and 90'. Also do they make a 91'? Someone said they did and I can't find any. Just need to know like frame differences, exterior, and if you know anythign different with the inner workings let me know that, too.

88 = series 4
89, 90, 91 = series 5 s4 and s5 have different tail lights, bumpers, and side moldings (s4 = black, s5 = body colored) Different gauge clusters and steering wheels. Different external mirror shapes. Slight differences in engines. Be more specific... what trim are you looking at? What do you want to do with the car? MOD EDIT: BE NICE. Mod edit was for me, seems they took out a comment regarding the expense of aftermarket parts for the FC vs. those of the 240sx.
Why they couldn't send me a PM is beyond me. I've been here for over a year, I've been around enough. |
I don't understand the mod edit; he was spot on and a 1+ yrs (not including 7club is modest, at least). Does he have to be a fucking grandpa to correct somebody??

Tessai. I was looking at FC's on Craigs list and found an 89' with small turbo mod. Either that or it was one of the Turbo II's. I forget. But anyway he says it runs rich and the second igniter runs just a bit of lag at first until it starts up. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it an easy timing issue I can fix without worry and cost? Says he has driven it with his new engine 3600 miles and the new engine didn't run boost till 1500 miles. That is all he sent me in an email. Anything else you need to know I can ask him. Better yet... What else should I ask him?

#1 thing to do is to ask for compression numbers
The igniter thing is a little odd... typically, the FC coils are robust and don't tend to fail. Its possible that it is bad, but I'd look it over because it could be another issue. Find out if a turbo engine was swapped in, if it is a turbo II, or if he added a turbo. The non-turbo and turbo motors run different compression ratios, so if he boosted the non-turbo motor without proper fuel/ecu mods it could be a time bomb. If he swapped the motor, find out what else was swapped. The entire turbo drivetrain is different, with the turbo transmission being quite beefy. No boost for the first 1500 miles sounds like he broke it in properly, which shows he's at least taking care of it. Most FC's run rich from the factory. Rotaries don't like to lean out, and detonation is deadly. hey good information. i'm looking at a 93 RX-7 saturday. prolly won't buy it but i want to at least get a look under the hood and test drive it. i owned an 8 but never a 7. red flag number one is the engine was replaced by mazda(rebuilt) at 38k and now has 43k. rebuilt turbo too i think. he wants 14k i wouldn't go a penny over 12k.

The FDs (93+) had issues with the eleventy-billion vacuum lines needed for the sequential turbo setup. A lot of mazda techs in the day couldn't figure out the problem, so they'd just call the motor dead and replace it.
