4x4 beater

Anyone know of a good one? i just signed the lease to a house in the mountains...and i need a beater for the winter. i really just want a old true 4x3 beater. dont want to spend much more than 3 g's. but something that is relatively reliable. i was thinking maybe a old Cherokee? anyone have any input?

I like the old Ford Broncos. Big and nasty

getdamafiaonyou 05-09-2009 09:17 PM

yeah i saw one today for 2...how do they hold up? im not looking for something i constantly have to work on. but a little here and there doesnt bother me... i mean... it's a old cheap car.

i think it'd be hard to find a 4*4 in decent enough condition for under 5k.

getdamafiaonyou 05-09-2009 09:55 PM

im not saying the cosmetics...but just something that will keep running.

myriadshalaks 05-09-2009 09:58 PM

i see a lot of old jeep wranglers still on the road.

and the pathfinders seem to have held up well.

not sure on the pricing of those. can you get into an auto auction in your area?

getdamafiaonyou 05-09-2009 10:01 PM

no idea...never seen one or been to one. i'll have to look it up

myriadshalaks 05-09-2009 10:04 PM

are you buddies with any car dealers?

myriadshalaks 05-09-2009 10:09 PM

i think you find something like this jeep in your price range at an auction.

or there's this

getdamafiaonyou 05-09-2009 10:33 PM

yeah a few..and yeah that's a decent price. i love the wrangler... always have.

I know the older Jeep Cj's are little tanks. Mine has been rolled (by me) and abused by several owners. It has a 258 in line 6 that has gaps in the manifold gaskets (backfires a bit). Yet when I decided to restore her she could still chirp the tires in 4 wheel high in the first 2 of 3 gears. And she's not some low rider Jeep, you have to climb into her as the bottom of her driver seat is about even with the top of my 8.

Probably the best part of an old Jeep is they are easy to work on. Even someone like myself can fix it (0 mechanical experience). Also the older Jeeps have common parts. I was surprised and stunned to find that parts of my 79 were the same as some of the mid 50's willy versions. Simple, fun and easy to work on...just get the right tires (I rolled due to wrong tires in an ice storm).

Subaru Legacy L Wagon.

....or if you wanna go the 4x4 car route you could look into the low/mid 80's AMC Eagle models. I believe they had 2 door, 4 door and wagon models

Shhh! :cwm27: Yeah I love goofing off with the Cj in the winter. It was great fun that day till the "ohh sh**" moment. Then it was brace for impact. When I came to a stop she was on the passenger side with me hanging in the seat belt...quite the odd feeling.

However, once they got her back on her wheels she fired right up. Only needed to put air in a tire that had deflated to drive her again. Though the body/frame damage took a bit more work....
