This 4600-Mile Mazda RX-7 Will Sell for Untold Millions of Dollars (well not millions of dollars, maybe millions of yen, But maybe six figures or at least more than its original price)

I personally had a 1993 RX7 Touring model, red w/five speed and that crazy Bose sound system.They cost close to $30K back then, wow. Wish I had kept it. One of my seven rotary cars since 1973. I have a mint-condition 2008 40th Anniversary RX8 still .

$30k back then is about $50+k now. I recall doing a little bit of research and finding out an FD cost just slightly less than a Corvette from the same time period.

$52,000 with 2 days remaining. Don't get me wrong, I certainly hope it sells when the bid ends, but the price seems a bit far fetched for an FD even in its condition.

If it does sell for over $50,000, I'll be beyond happy for the FD. I've always wanted the FD to sky rocket in value like the Supra and NSX.

The last few that have hit the market with this kind of mileage have all been automatics. This is the first manual car I've seen with this kind of mileage, so yes I do expect the price to be up there.

It has alot going for it. It's the best year of the FD (in the US), the best trim package (IMHO), and a manual. The thing working against it is the fact the car is Mongtengo Blue, which is the least desirable color for the FD (at least in the US). Had the car been any other color, I could see it going much higher than it is now.

Also @gwilliams6 cool it on the text size. We all can read normal text just fine.

I would say the R2 package of the '94 is the most sought after. R2 includes an extra oil cooler, no power sunroof, upgraded suspension (BIlstein shocks, strut tower brace), and brake ducts just to name a few items.

Though one can also argue that the Touring has the funky Bose Acoustiwave (sp), leather seats, etc going for it.

Wasn't there a mint Mk IV Supra in the US that sold for close to $100k recently? I can imagine an FD selling for pretty high nowadays.

Whether or not it's really worth that? That's for each person to answer.

I absolutely HATE the whole collectible car scene. Shit doesn’t make sense to buy, maintain and store a car for 10, 20, 30 years and NOT DRIVE IT (referring to the 0 mile cars)

why? Lol. You only live once. You bought an AWESOME CAR, why would you deny yourself the pleasure, only to sell it to some idiot who will wrap it around a tree probably and destroy it. LOL.

Is the potential profit margin really worth it? I’d personally rather drive it. The experience is priceless.

I hope this car sells for a pretty penny. It’s worth it. I just hope the new owner will actually DRIVE IT and not just put it away again.

Reminds me of this picture.

Too bad there are very few FD that's not either mint or modded to hell.

Personally, if I could get a relatively unmodded one, I would go ahead and update the interior to modern standards and up the power just a bit. I recall seeing a C2 Corvette with touch screen and a lot of modern retrofits a while back.

The exterior of the FD will never age, but the interior... Yeah it will need work. A lot of it.

I mean, if you really want to look at a car up close every day...

For me, if I want to see a mint FD up close, I can either go to a car show or include the Mazda museum if I go on a trip to Japan again. It's not hard.

Driving one, on the other hand, is what the money really buys IMO.

And yeah, waiting for 25 years to earn $50k(assuming this sells for $100k and inflation is accounted), that's some slow investment...

Also. who knows what the future of collectible cars will be other than museum pieces?
I can imagine internal combustion vehicles getting more and more restricted to meeting stringent emission and safety standards that could exclude classics from being driven on the open road.
That could make all but the most pristine collectibles plummet in value.

My argument has been for years at the age of the car, the shocks would be due for replacement anyway, which makes it a moot point.

The other parts can be easily swapped over. The touring model gives you the rear wiper and sunroof. The R1/R2 model made sense if you explicitly didn't want a sunroof, and didn't want to do the work of swapping over the second oil cooler etc.

Not winning much with this car. Had it been $100,000 on top of that, I can see the point but when you buy any car, it’s a gamble whether it will be a collectible 25 years from now worth 100k over MSRP

Yea there’s no way it’s gonna have all fluids changed and DRIVEN daily and enjoyed.

Definitely going from one idiot collector to the next. Just rusting and rotting away.

When it does finally hit the road in 2045, the damn Apex Seals will fail instantly by 5,000 miles and it will need a rebuild. LOL!!!!!!

$70k?!? Wow!!! Well the car is certainly clean. Surprising so high for a '93 but just my opinion. A clean '95 r2 would be nuts to find. I regret not buying a supra or nsx back when the values dropped between $20-30k here in SF bay.

My very first car was a 455SD Pontiac Trans Am . At 17 and being the girl who beat every guy racing,back when you had to buy gas every other day (8 mpge). This was a very fast car but I didn't know fast off the line until I got my Rx7. I have no idea how they would do in long distance but I loved the initial rush. The car became a legend with Fast and the Furious. I'm surprised it didn't sell for more. You don't see many on the road, I'm assuming because most were totaled. I know whenever I went to a pick and pull for small parts for mine, you could tell whomever was in the Rx7s didn't survive and they were all totaled only good for maybe a seat ,window motor, etc.
If I had the money I might pay that or more just for the memories. Made the mistake of getting a 2004 Rx8, never had the pick up .Then let it sit while we drove our other cars (with a new paint job) . Naive husband drove it ,told him to get oil change. They told him to change radiator. I got radiator and even got flush in the meantime and he continued to drive it. Now I need a new rotary. We guess, no one will start it because they don't want to blow the engine...but I'm told the engine is blown!!!

You were told it's blown, did you see any compression test results?
Many times these cars suffer from problems that are often easy fixes, ignition, catalytic converter, flooding from one of the above failing....
Did you have any problems starting it when it was hot?
That's a sign of a blown engine.

Well that's what the old JDM is all about, memories and nostalgia. Looking at it objective, none of them are worth the hyped up price they have now.

And like BC said you should attempt to fix it properly. RX-8 is not fast but it's still decently fun, and at least they handle well and are not overpriced.
