The #55 feed has gotten stuck in the pits.
Is the car dead?

Rolling again after a 7 minute stop.

Not a very good race so far for Mazda. #55 running 16th, and #77 running 25th (18th in class, behind 7 lower class cars. ). There is still time for improvement but neither car seems to be able make any major moves.

Joest may have bitten off more than they can chew with these Mazdas. Time and more thorough engineering and testing will tell, along with better pit crews. How many additional Mazda prototypes we will see catch fire on track ? Depressing.

I tuned in early this morning for sunrise portion of the race - Switched to the #55 Mazda right as it was making a god awful noise crawling around the track, and it finally pulled off into the grass as smoke began pouring out from under it. Live feed stopped there...

Was not how I wanted to start off my morning.

They at least lasted 12 hours, which is better than I predicted. So maybe there's a chance at Sebring?

Unless they're allowed to play tricks with the fuel like AAR Toyota did in the 80s, they can't squeeze so much power out of this engine and expect it to last.

yah, I think most of us were hoping to wake up as Tuner said to a nice dose of coffee, prototypes, and Mazda winning!

while this is a huge disappointment, I just never felt that MZ motor could excel in endurance races but I do believe with the weight the car is running at and the power it has shown it can make, I think Mazda will be competitive in the sprint races this season.

At least they didn't blow out so many rear right tires that they just threw in the towel like WTR did this morning.

Kicked Speedsource to the curb, pulled out of remainder of last season when they finally had momentum, results so far are not better...

#55 car finishes 46th, and #77 car finishes 47th. Not very encouraging. Not sure if/when they can be competitive. Joest and Mazda have a lot of work ahead. I know they will do all they can, but I have never thought this MZR engine could be a winner against this competition.

Well, there's 45 days until Sebring.
Let's hope they learned something from their 16 hours of Daytona racing.

Hopefully they will train their pit crew how to tighten wheels to the spindle, at the very least.

BC.

Juttner: Joest ‘Must Improve’ After Challenging Mazda Debut

Mazda Team Joest managing director Ralf Juttner says they must build on the positives, and address the shortcomings exposed in an incident-filled Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Neither of the heavily revised Mazda RT24-Ps made it to the finish in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season-opener, prompting the Joest-run operation to push for improvements before the next round at Sebring.

While the team did show improved pace, lapping Daytona 3.3 seconds faster than last year’s best time and topping the first Rolex 24 practice session with Rene Rast, Juttner admitted Mazda Team Joest’s debut proved more difficult than he had anticipated.

“I was happy that we at least got 16 hours of running with both cars; that was the good thing. The bad is that we clearly ran into systematic problems,” Juttner told Sportscar365.

“A lot of things happened that haven’t happened before and they didn’t happen on one car but both at a similar time. There were waste gate problems, exhaust problems, electrical… We had these funny complete shutdowns in the cars.

“Sometimes for two or three seconds, sometimes for eight, nine, ten seconds, complete power out and then it was there again and that included power steering.”

The persistent electrical glitches ultimately forced the No. 77 Mazda out of the race, while the sister No. 55 car was retired earlier after an exhaust failure and a resultant fire.

Juttner said the team would regroup to address the problems before the IMSA-sanctioned test at Sebring next month.

“I don’t know what the solution will be,” he said. “We will see together in the next days and discuss it. Probably we will go [to Sebring] maybe with only one car with the improvements in to try to sort those out.

“I don’t know. We will discuss it, involve partners, but we have to improve.

“We have to now really identify our problems, address what works on it to fix it, and to try to fix it because we don’t need to go to drive around. We need to fix this on some important areas.”

Juttner, however, said the silver lining for the team was the improved pace of the car.

“One other good thing is that at least at stages the speed was not bad,” he said. “That gives a bit of hope. If we were nowhere with speed and unreliable then it would be really difficult. But that didn’t look too bad at stages.

“Not at a constant enough basis, but there were stints where we were running the pace of the leaders. There were other stints where we were a bit slower, but that was positive.”

they had a lot of experience from racing rotary cars that they were able to pull from when SpeedSource debuted them.
This is basically an entirely new car so there's sure to be growing pains.

Now is when things get interesting; how quickly can Team Joest identify and address these issues and show improvement on track.

Also interesting that they might just run changes on ONE car next race

Oh, dear

***The only significant incident as of 4 p.m. ET was a red flag for the No. 55 Mazda RT24-P of Harry Tincknell, which stopped on track in Turn 17 with smoke billowing out of the rear of the DPi car. IMSA safety crews were quickly on the scene to attend to the car.

Well, they have 18 days to figure out how to get their cars to stop emulating the Furai.

alright, time to dust ourselves off from Daytona and get ready to go racing again! 12 hours of Sebring is next wekeend so hopefully we'll start hearing more news coming out of the teams and see who is ready to compete for the podium.

Speaking of teams, looks like we might have gotten a little gift from IMSA courtesy of their latest BoP changes.

Both the Acura ARX-05 and Nissan Onroak DPi face power reductions, while the Rolex 24 at Daytona-winning Cadillac DPi has been given a 10kg weight increase.

The adjustment for the Cadillac DPi brings it up to a minimum weight of 950kg, ten more than any other Prototype class competitor.

The pair of Acura Team Penske entries, meanwhile, face a turbo boost decrease across all power levels as well as a 1-liter fuel capacity reduction, with the Nissan DPi getting power reductions between 6000-7600 rpm.

Mazda’s RT24-P is the only beneficiary from the BoP changes, with the Multimatic-built prototype receiving a 2-liter increase in fuel and aero adjustments to its rear wing.

I hope Joest/Mazda issues a technical review on what happened at Daytona and remedies to the the problems. That is the only way I can feel any hint of hope of Joest/Mazda's success going into 12 Hours of Sebring.

I doubt we'll get many details on exactly what happened, I'd just like to see them be competitive.
They spent a WHOLE LOT of time & money overhauling that car under the Joest flag so I believe it can run with the pack, they just need to keep it on track long enough to be in contention.
