I dont get it, no where in your post does it mention the same numbers you listed in you thread title. Am I missing something?

Spin9k 11-14-2011 08:02 AM

LOL no, I am....was... :rollingla

bulletproof21 11-14-2011 08:07 AM

ah ok I see the edit now, nevermind.

345 hp and 0-60 is only 5.9? WTF, our cars with that much power could be 4.5, jeeze.

pking1122 11-14-2011 11:44 AM

Seems to me like these cars will be paper champs, and idiots will eat it up. I'd like to see how they both stack up to an R3, 370Z, or Mustang GT.

Rotary-RX8 11-14-2011 01:53 PM

man every manufacturer is making more and more powerful cars. Makes our 238 hp 1.3 look bad :( .. Still love my baby though lol.

Spin9k 11-14-2011 01:59 PM

^ Worse... "every" (well perhaps not every) manufacturer is making (or about to introduce) a sports car with more powerful engines AND/OR lighter weight AND fresh new styling ----- EXCEPT Mazda. By the time they get around to having enough money and time to do one (if they actually ever do) I'm sorely afraid it will be a (yet another) case of too little, too late into the competitive fray.

I bet production numbers will be a whole lot lower. Sheesh I think my car can do 5.9 now, with 270-ish.

Affordable sports cars are pretty much dead. You have the American muscle and the 370Z. That's pretty much it. I don't quite throw cars like the MX-5 and Genesis Coupe into that same sports car category, but I will admit I test drove the 3.8 Genny and it was very, very nice. Nobody wants to do anything but churn out boring econoboxes these days.

As for Mazda, they seem content to use the MX-5 as their halo car and take it to the grave with them.

TALAN7 11-15-2011 02:41 PM

Those 0-60 times are off! both the current 3.8 and 2.0T are faster than those times.

I predict 5.2 for the 3.8 and 5.9-6 for the 2.0T.
Either way Hyundai is playing in the big leagues. You'll be seeing blown 2.0ts with well over 300hp soon.

...so the upcoming Subaru BRZ, the Toyota FT-86, and the Scion FRZ, new Hyundai Genesis 2.0T, and then the Fiat Abarth... and there is talk of the affordable Porsche roadster, and oh yes the Ford Focus RS, among others aren't vying for the sports car / hot hatch market?? Why are they being introduced? And that's not considering the US muscle car market, true low cost sports cars they may not be, but some can contest an M3 on the track if that counts for anything.

Seems like the affordable sports car market is just about to reach boiling point :dunno:

dynamho 11-15-2011 03:05 PM

0-100kph (0-62mph) times seem underrated.
I guess they're playing it safe, unlike Mazda who had to backpedal by overstating figures on more than one occasion.

The numbers look potent, but I can't get over the peeled foreskin styling trend (GT-R, Mitsus, and now this).

CarAndDriver 11-16-2011 01:38 PM

From the reviews I have read, the 2.0T accelerates slower than what the numbers would indicate. I think Hyundai is one of those car markers where your acceleration numbers are at or lower than you would expect. The Sonata isn't as quick as its various engines would indicate. Other makers like BMW and Porsche tend to underestimate v overestimate.

no really, 238 out of a 1.3L thats still impressive cant beat it. plus that front end is a voloster front end. yuck!

77mjd 11-16-2011 05:33 PM

I wish Hyundai would just shorten that car up and get rid of the useless backseats. I test drove a 3.8 track and it was very nice but the car is just too big for my liking. Doesn't have the glove-like fit/feel the 8 does.

Well, the first three are the same car. The Fiat Abarth? You mean the tarted up Fiat 500? A sports car? Seriously?

The Genesis Coupe is more of a "grand touring coupe" rather than an actual sports car.

olddragger 11-17-2011 07:02 PM

a 3.8 genesis track model --was doing very very well in a hpde class
here is a vid he posted

wrightcomputing 11-17-2011 07:12 PM

I drove the 3.8 Autocrossing when I was helping out at the Novice school and appart from the auto gearbox which stayed in 3rd after changing up I thought the car was great. Handled very well, it was nice and predictable, quite similar to the Rx8 handling but I still preferred my Rx8.

Roidz 11-17-2011 08:22 PM

Hyundai is making some nice cars. I'm likin my new sonata as a dd and this looks pretty cool as well.

FungsterRacing 11-18-2011 11:08 AM

Those 0-60 times are off IMO. Otherwise it just doesn't justify that kind of power to such "slow" times. (Slow as per the stated power output).

I too wouldn't classify this as a Sports Car, but I wouldn't mind test driving one... see what it rides like

I don't think so. 345hp on an 8 I imagine would be high 4s at best. Keep in mind that this isn't rwhp as well.

DailyDriver2k5 11-18-2011 12:59 PM

Those times can't be right. With that much HP and torque either:

1. Both cars are extremely heavy

2. Both cars use very tall gearing for 1st and 2nd.

They certainly are. Just saw my first Veloster today and honestly, from the tons of pics I've seen of it I thought that car was ugly as sin but that thing looks a million times better in person. Might actually go test drive one this weekend.

I definitely agree with your comment on the veloster. It looks MUCH better in person.
