2009 McLaren SLR Stirling Moss

Things got just a bit brighter for the Detroit Auto Show. Mercedes-Benz will officially unveil what will surely be one of the most attention-grabbing cars in Cobo Hall, the 2009 McLaren SLR Stirling Moss. The boldly styled Merc will be the last vehicle built under the partnership with McLaren, and even at a cost of €750,000 Mercedes should have no trouble finding buyers for the 75-car allotment. Each will feature full carbon fiber bodywork wrapped over the standard version, a 650-hp supercharged 5.5-liter V8 and the five-speed automatic transplanted from the SLR 722. Despite lacking any sort of roof or proper windscreen, the Stirling Moss can still achieve a top speed of 217 mph and can reach 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds. Other unique features include "swing-wing" doors, a retractable air brake that can be operated manually and a two-piece tonneau cover (stored in the trunk) that can cover the entire cockpit or just the passenger seat. Check out the gallery below for high-resolution images, and expect plenty more when we see the car live in Detroit.

mysql 12-19-2008 10:44 AM

for that kind of money, I'd want a v12 in it.

DarkLord7854 12-19-2008 10:44 AM

That looks horrid honestly. I don't really care how fast it can go, it looks wrong IMO.

JRichter 12-19-2008 11:03 AM

I can see what they are paying homage to but I like my cars with windsheilds and roofs. I don't think I've ever fully liked the SLR or any of its variants.

alfy28 12-19-2008 11:07 AM

^^ i cant think of any SLR that i actually said" WOW that looks nice."

Jedi54 12-19-2008 11:22 AM

not liking it at all

77mjd 12-19-2008 11:24 AM

^^^Agreed. I haven't seen a single McLaren that I found at all attractive. I think they're all ugly.

Hey, a rock just hit me in the face at 200mph!

Actually, it would be quite funny for all the forces in the universe to work together and cause some uber-millionaire to catch pigeon shit in the mouth at top speed.

TopGear8 12-22-2008 07:56 PM

Where is the windsheild? You'd be eating a hell of alot of bugs driving that car.

REsuperD 12-22-2008 08:25 PM

this is actually pretty cool. you HAVE to wear a full helmet when driving this, like a race car. given the # that they're gonna produce, it's not that big of a travesty. most of them will end up sitting on a display in someone's mansion or maybe being driving in concours and on weekends. it's a pure toy, a pretty fun-looking one
