I saw a billboard for this car and thought ewwww. But then, I wondered why I saw it on the billboard before the internet. Strange that is, very strange. Anyway, here it is.

I actually think the coupe looks horrible, but that droptop is actually pretty nice.

 

Could be about the only car I've ever seen that looks better as a vert than as a hardtop. I don't hate it...

 

Just keep in mind the pic that BlueEyes posted a link to has a body kit on it which dramatically changes the overall shape of underside of the car. If you see them in person it's even more dramatic.

Has anyone even bothered to see the new Eclipse upclose in person? I have a 3G Eclipse and I've parked it right next to a new model and the new ones look smaller even though they are bigger in every dimension. This car really, really feels like it sheds its weight at speeds and it doesn't have as much softness in the steering and body roll as the 3G does.

I'm not saying that they're totally awesome (especially given the high price of the V6 models), but I just hope people are keeping an open mind and not just acting like every RX-8 hater out there that knows nothing about the car and just spouts off some crap from Car & Driver.

This is the view that kills me. And, the same view the billboard had. It's just so....ugly!

 

It is not a bad looking car really, just too big and heavy overall. I think it would have been a great car if they used the lancer platform instead of the galant platform. That would have made it a much better car, especially since they could have used the evo drivetrain. AWD turbo GSX revival. That is something I would have considered buying!

No way. If you look at it then you are qualified to render an opinion as to how you think it looks. I just get bothered by the people who read C&D and then post all these opinions about how the car drives and handles without even having seen one in person. Those are the same people that criticize the 8 haters for doing the exact same thing.

I have an Eclipse so I have a bit of an allegiance to the car. I hate convertibles and the front air dam is weird. But it's better than my car in just about every way (even though it weighs more) so I do fancy the car a tad.

 

labeling/stero typing is bad but that is just funny.

That car looks good in all the pictures hard or soft top but in person for some reason it is just hedious, probabley becasue the rear end sticks way to far out past the back tires.

 

yeah -- like the Z its "***" is huge. (but i like the Z a lot more then the Eclipse)

umm yeah - it will be a chick car... thats all I really see driving eclipses' now-a-days. And ouch 260HP and it weighs almost 4000 pounds... *barf*

am I to assume that our RX8 6MT will be able to smoke this fat piece of crap? (oh yeah its a drop top AND a fatass so handling will be out the window)

Is this thing coming out soon? because it isnt even mid-2006 and 2007s are here? it gets worse and worse every year. I think the next year models should only be allowed out say 3 or 4 months ahead of the actualy year the car is due.

I think the convert looks better than the coupe.

 

That convertible seems to bring out all the weird lines and proportions of the car. The butt's too big, something funky is going on with the doors, the front is goofy looking and with the top up, it looks like somebody wearing one of those novelty mini baseball helmets. Guess where I stand.

 

I think it's really nice looking. A guy in an apartment complex has a black GT, and I happen to think this is the nicest looking Eclipse ever made. I remember saying it will look hot as a convertible, and I believe it does. Like it or not, this car is gonna sell, so those hating it on this site, are in a minority here. If we wanna mock it because of it's weight, lack of handling ect ect, that's fine, but that's it's purpose, so I'm not about to criticize it. If I could get over my Mitsubishi bias, I'd consider one as a daily driver. It's funny how on other websites, people make the same criticisms regarding the looks of the RX8. I guess we have two options. We stay in our own little RX8 RULES world, or we appreciate other cars for what they are built for, much like the RX8. It's your choice.

I had a 97 eclipse convertable, and it was great. Decent gas milage, smooth shifting 5 spd. I only had three problems around 90k miles the water pump went out, at 110k the bow seal on the drivers side started to leek and at 115k a cam angle sensor went out. Other than that I had no problems with the car.

 

i just cant take the new eclipse seriously.. it's just too fat..
I mean jesus.. the *** is huge! They could've chopped like 14 inches off of the back of that car and it wouldn't look half as freakin ridiculous.

 

I like it better than the hard top, but thats not saying much. LOL
