Rear active steer? This thing got 4WS?

DreRX8 08-01-2005 02:44 PM

hmm--its about time they changed that spoiler--the G35 has the worst spoiler I've seen, it looks like an afterthought. 4WS--every time I see this feature introduced it turns out to be more of a burden than an assitance--its rarely effective and popular. what NO PICS?

Feras 08-01-2005 02:46 PM

call me a geek but i drool over the bluetooth. I hate my blue tooth headset but its the only way to have a phone conversation in the car. Now if i could just talk to my car instead and my friends talk back through the speakers...now thats awesome.

BigOLundh 08-01-2005 02:56 PM

yeah, i'd like to see pics of the new rear tailights and wing...

i actually liked the older wing, very clean looking.

Gambit 08-01-2005 03:07 PM

I kinda liked the original spoiler it had...i'm curious to see how this looks though

Think HICAS from the Z32 (1990's 300ZX) and just about every Skyline since the R32, if memory serves. They've been using 4WS in some of their cars since the late 80's. The computer can steer the rear wheels up to 2 degrees, with or counter to the front wheels depending on speed and other factors.

I'm not sure how HICAS-like the new system is, but it's the same principle. I happen to love it. It let's me take tight corners and long sweepers at a pretty decent clip. Other people flat out hate it and just get it removed from their cars.

Don Vito 08-01-2005 07:45 PM

Pics?

Twinturbo Z32's, Skyline GT-R's, and S13's (that had the option).

A friend of mine has a new TL - he can do that. The car detects the phone and lets you hear incoming calls through the speakers.

Shiri 08-02-2005 07:09 AM

Hicas adds weight, that's why people remove them. Honda also tried out similar technology with their older Prelude series.

The whole idea didn't really take off. Not sure why Nissan wants to bring it back again (and Honda).

KYLiquid 08-02-2005 07:23 AM

the old mazda mx6 had it didnt it?

edit : my friend has a ealry 90's mx6 that he put a turbo motor in, and I know he has 4ws, but im not sure if he swaped it in...i would think it would be fairly difficult to adapt it from another car.

DreRX8 08-02-2005 07:42 AM

The JDM Millenia aka Eunos 800 had 4ws as an option. 4ws sucks--it adds weight and becomes more of a hinderance on the drag strip and autocross track. From what I understand from the Z32 guys is that it also adds maintenance cost. I hate the current G35 spoiler it looks like such an afterthought--it doesn't flow with the body at all. I'd take it without a spoiler--but to each his own.

rx8wannahave 08-02-2005 11:09 AM

I like the G35 spoiler and the car overall looks great! Before anyone else brings it up...

THIS THREAD IS USELESS WITHOUT PIC'S!

lol

Mikelikes2drive 08-02-2005 11:53 AM

hmm skyline rear lights maybe?!?!
and wow they actually gave them the memory seats after like 3 years of complaining... good job nissan!
i wonder how much this will be? and where are the pics?!

Jedi54 08-02-2005 12:18 PM

Feras, I'm totally with you on the Bluetooth. What I would do to have that in an RX8... *drool*

Memory Seats  I love those things...

Wonder what this is going to do to the MSRP.
I was looking at a G35 last year and with all the options, I was hitting 42,000. This could get scary...

DreRX8 08-02-2005 12:44 PM

This will further the G35 from the Z--all this adds weight.

It already has Skyline rear lights, since it is a Skyline.;)

Where did you get this information?

DreRX8 08-02-2005 01:43 PM

I saw the same info over on www.freshalloy.com in the G35 forum.

Sorry. I'm not down with plagiarism. :D

Anyhoo, Dre, get on The Face Book and join my RX-8 group.

Removing HICAS yields minimal weight savings. HICAS is nothing more than a servo on the rear suspension.

NgoRX8 08-03-2005 06:16 PM

Memory seats... I guess Nissan/Infiniti is listening to its forum members.

15-20kg, quite a bit of saving.

Really? Then explain how that servo is powered. Also, how does that sevo pivot those rear wheels that are not designed pivot on all other cars? What tells the servo to fire up?

Near as I can tell and Nissan for that matter one would add an electrically driven hydraulic pump, some tie rods, more complex rear suspension knuckles (heavier) to allow pivoting rear wheels, a subframe that has an area to mount this crap, some sensors and a processor to decide what to do and a crap load of wires.

I gotta say that sounds about right.

DreRX8 08-04-2005 08:00 AM

HICAS will make the car slower--especially if they don't turn up the power knob on the VQ again. Remember why the Z32 turbo was the slowest of the comparable Japanese sports cars at the time--weight. HICAS is a mess--hopefully they make it optional.

The HICAS system in the 1990-1993 turbo Z's was hydraulic and it ran off the main power steering pump. In 94, they moved to an electric unit. The computer tells the servo to fire up and by how much to steer the rear wheels.

Most Z32 owners that remove HICAS are model year 90-93 owners and they do it because it's extremely expensive to fix once it's broken. Once they moved to the electric unit, long term reliability on the system improved.

The sensors that you speak of are already in place on the G35's and most modern cars; yaw, steering angle, wheel speed, etc, so all they need to do is alter the suspension to steer the rear wheels.

The Z was all over the place as far as 0-60 stats, but trap speeds seemed to be pretty consistent at ~ the 102-103 mph on the 1/4 mile. The Supra and the 3000GT were right around the same weight as the TT Z, if memory serves. 3000GT VR4 was the slowest and heaviest of the bunch until they dialed up the boost a bit to produce 320 hp, but by then the Z was off of the market anyways.
From owning the Z as well as some BMW's I can tell you that HICAS will slow you down on certain corners until you learn the limits of the system and the car.
From personal experience and for comparison, BMW's tend to be super easy to drive fast, right up to the limit. The Z takes some getting used to.

shelleys_man_06 08-04-2005 03:26 PM

I'm sure Nissan's new four-wheel steering setup will be nowhere near the crappiness of the original Z32's. I guess electronics are good for something.

termigni 08-12-2005 09:17 AM

did you say Projector headlights?? they are finally getting rid of that ugly traditional headlights! yay.

how bout a new set of seats so people don't break their backs? ;)

I just read a review of the M45 vs. GS430--I forgot that the M45 has the rear-steering assist. I am assuming its the same setup that will be going into the G35 coupe; they commented in Autoweek that it is much better than the HICAS setup of the Z32 and. The rear wheels will turn a max of 1 degree to increase grip and stability. Me personally, I think its another mechanism to counter the weight that is gained by the device; I wish they would make that type of stuff optional.

Spoken like a true ignorant.

What's the next best 4 wheel steering available out there then? Honda? Mazda?

Depends on the model, Z32 2+0 TT (2 seater) was actually as fast as the Supra Turbo, which was 4 years newer (same as the RX7 and 3000 GTO).
HICAS was set up to prevent tire slipping when cornering hard, thus the reason why the Z32 "acts" a little slower around the corners. Its a safety feature, not something that will improve cornering speed when taking an autoX course, and it is certainly not something that will help drift a car either.

For this reason, the HICAS was a non-benefit to those wanting to track the car. HICAS would actually "twitch" the rear end of the car when exiting a corner, thus delaying power until the car maintained balance (which was after the twitching).

The solution was of course to remove it or buy the Stillen HICAS eliminator. Removing the whole thing was a much better idea since it saved weight. Traditional track racing doesn't require the use of high technological features like these anyway since it is so driver dependent (different case for the GTRs, EVOs and STIs where their AWD serve as a strength on the track).

Also, HICAS can perform differently depending on how they were programmed.
The Nissan kicks in when the car is in high speed, on the Honda it only activates when the car is trying to park. Not sure what the MX6 did, probably the same as Nissan. The strangest thing about the Mazda MX6 was the fact that it was a turboed FWD with 4 wheel steering. Not sure what that translated into.

So for the new G35 to have HICAS, it wouldn't be so much of an issue since the G is more of a GT where luxury, safety and cruiser ability are more important. It will serve as safety feature just like VDC.

Red Devil 08-12-2005 11:14 AM

Never saw or witnessed anything to substantiate a factory Z32 put up similar numbers to a factory Supra Turbo. They always seemed to be a few tenths slower.

DreRX8 08-12-2005 01:57 PM

Yeah--300ZX TTs were always a few ticks behind the RX7 and Supra TTs--they usually were quicker than the 3000GT until those models got the 20HP boost.

Umbra 08-17-2005 01:18 PM

So did they fix the "grampa" interior issue?

Morgan 08-17-2005 01:43 PM

i like the interor a lot!! the BF bitch's about it all the tome...but i love every aspect about the car (i got to drive it to tampa last weekend) and loved every min of it.

http://www.infinitinews.com/multimed...35_coupe.shtml here are the official pics of the 06 coupes

playdoh43 08-18-2005 12:44 AM

HICAS is on the new M45 and most magazines are very positive about it, autoweek especially mentioned that its nothing like the old 300ZX version in their GS430 vs M45 comparison. Im not a huge fan of it though, because G35 is a fat boy to begin with :) its already got better skid pad and slalom numbers than 350Z, i much rather they take off some weight, and give it the full 300hp engine instead of 298hp.
