10 out of 10: The V-10-engined BMW M5 is, simply, brilliant

The Mercedes E55 AMG has turbine-like grunt and soulless controls. The new M5, in contrast, is intuitive and involves the driver every step of the way. It is as stable as its rivals in a straight line, but its steering is lively and soulful. It is as fast through corners, but its handling is sublime and unambiguous. It is as strong on the brake and as energetic on the throttle, but it never forgets to generate feel and feedback. We said the same about the old M5, but this one has more raw speed and power and an even better-balanced chassis. The ride is more composed, with less body roll and understeer. It is more fluent, and there is a greater immediacy between input and reaction. The M5 could spell bad news for your driving license, but it's guaranteed to brighten up the dullest day. Just about the only car that can rival it in terms of speed from A to B, smiles per miles, and everyday usability is the latest 911 Carrera S. The Porsche costs roughly the same money, and it may rank even higher in street cred, but the BMW offers five seats, a family-size trunk, and a less challenging attitude when pushed. This car is a sensible antidepressant, and it doesn't even require a prescription-just a healthy bank balance. |

The styling's still not my cup of tea, but it's definitely an improvement on the regular 5 series.

Get rid of Bangle and iDrive, give me a regular manual (no, I don't care if it's 0.2 seconds slower in the 1/4 or whatever) and we'll talk.
And what the deal with having to fiddle with the settings each time you start the car in order to get the full 500 horsepower? Screw that, if I'm ponying up the extra dough for the M version, I want all the horsies all the time. If you can afford this car then you can afford to get 10mpg and new rear tires every other month. |
well, IMO, I love the style, looks much more aggresive than the old 5 and all the other bland saloons running around from germany, except the CLS.
I love the iDrive, I test drove a 745 a little while ago and it seemed very intuitive to me, I could see older folks having problems with it though, TS for them. :D I actually prefer the SMG in this type of car. Lets face it is is a autobahn stormer not a track star. I could see myself commuting to work in this thing, and realistically I wouldn't want a manual for that duty. Now if this was a balls out sports car, then yes I would agree with you. I had an M3 with SMG and it was great for commuting, and when I was able to open it up it preformed admirably, although I missed the manual when driving 'spiritedly. Let's face it, if you can afford this car, you also have a sports car in that garage too ;) As fiddling with settins each time you start the car. To get 500hp you press one button, you don't use I drive. It would be the same as turning your radio on. You can program preferences in for the shift patters and dampening etc... which will be default on start up, so I can't see one having to fiddle to much once it's driving how they like. |
The M5 is terrific, but I still don't like the new e60 body style and interior. For the same money, my choice would be the new 997 type Porsche 911 S (in Yellow!)

I agree--I want to love this car--but I only can respect it; cause that E60 design is hideous to me. I'll take the 911 or E55.

I've seen a few new 5-series in black cruising around, and they look GOOOOOD! I love the styling, love everything about the car, I think I might go pick one up tommorow.

i think these writers are on crack when they say that a big ol' sedan like that is more fun than a real sports car, though. boy oh boy, does their marketing department ever know what photographers to hire to get their cars to look right. wow. |

M5 is hot. BMW, in general gets a thumbs down to due to problems to 3 bimmers in my family. There are a couple new 5 series in my work's parking lot, and one has decent stock rims and the other's stock rims look like they belong on a Geo.

Too bad the V10 is odd firing.
I think those BMW guys took the F1 thing a little too seriously. |
