There's a few threads on the subject. Some possibilities besides failure of the P/S unit are a bad wiring harness, torque sensor or a loose connector.

Have them install the revised wiring harness...this problem will not go away if they install a steering module.

The suspect connector is on the radiator support. When the resistance gets out of spec it shuts down the EPS system.

Did you not fix your car yet? I see your last most in 2005 on this matter. does your car still have the problem? My power steering is hard to steer in the morning until the engine warms up. Dealers have no clue. Nor does the EPS warning light come up to identify the problem.

I had the same problem twice, once while actually driving on the highway @ 65mph. I'll ask the dealership when I go in for the recall.

I know this is an old thread, but Mine failed last summer('05) and they changed the EPS. Picked it up and failed right away in the dlears prkng lot. EPs # 2. Same thing. Finially they changed the rack and stated that the racks internal sensor failed.

Cost of rack was 2 grand. Warranty of course.
still sucks though .

guys,

I'm from Singapore, driving the RX8 for 3yrs 2mths. Here is experience..

I got the same problem for a yr...

Tried changing harness, relay, ++++ Finally, changed the entire steering rack. Problem solved!!!

If yours is under warranty, I suggest that you BANG HARD on their tables or threaten to suit them. Bottom line is to get the entire rack change instead of going through the same pain!

To-date, nobody can confirm changing other parts (torque sensor, module, harness, relay....) can resolve this. Now you know the answer..."Steering Rack"

Cheers

If it feels like entirely no power steering at all time! Try checking 1 connector which is located at your battery terminal.

1. open your battery cover, look at the +ve battery terminal.
2. there is a "very small" connector just below the +ve connecting point.
3. If you couldn't find the connector, look inside the surrounding for a loose connector. it might drop out due to mishandling during battery change.
4. make sure you connect it back to the point attached to the +ve terminal. there is a pin just below it.

Note: This is a direct power supply to your power steering motor.

Hope this is the problem!

Cool Fix.....

Mine failed at about two years old, they wanted to replace the steering rack but I told them about the harness.
The rad had boiled over, and glycol got all over, a new (modified) harness fixed the problem 100%, two years ago, no longer an issue.
