Top Up

Hey guys, need to trouble/bother you with hey another Q. I've changed my engine oil at 1000km mark and till now, my mileage is abt 3300km. Did a oil check yesterday and realised that the level on my dip-stick is between 1/2 - 3/4 mark full. Common sense tells me that I need to top up my oil, but izzit necessary to use back the same brand of oil or juz any brand BUT with the density?

Lastly, now that the oil level is at that, will it harm my engine? Opss, forgot to state that I'm currently on HKS oil.

Thks....

Fab 8 01-11-2004 09:58 PM

Its better to use the same brand and weight. But at 1/2 to 3/4 mark, thats still pretty ok.

I didn't top up before my 5,000 km service, by then the oil level had dropped to abt 1/3 from the bottom mark. But no oil light or anything, even with hard driving.

SingRX8 01-11-2004 10:08 PM

OK...and i thot it must always be at the top mark. Eniwae, wat oil r u using now? M tinking of switching ard to see which is better.

Thks for your input, Fab8.

Fab 8 01-11-2004 10:10 PM

Same as you, HKS rotary oil.

I've heard castrol RS is pretty good. Haven't tried though. Maybe for my next service.

Neon 01-11-2004 11:22 PM

I use d same oil. Me havent notice or rather lazy to check since oil change at 5000km. Maybe i should but doesnt one can of HKS - RE fills slightly over the brim? At least last i checked, it was.

SingRX8 01-12-2004 12:10 AM

Hey Fab8, that was wat i had in mind too. Remembered reading somewhere that Mazda uses Castrol oil rite? Or was i mistaken? eniwae, be it u or me 1st, let's post our views after the subsequent oil change.

Fab 8 01-12-2004 12:38 AM

One of the forum members (Ringer, I think) is using the castrol already and feels that it is smoother than the Mazda rotary oil.

Neon, we need 4.5 litres to fill up the sump...which is kinda irritating as the HKS oil comes in 4 litre cans.

Hiya,

Me also on Castrol RS, but feel that the HKS is smoother....

But HKS is much more Expensive as compared to Castrol....

Daverx 01-12-2004 02:25 AM

Hi

myself & 2F2F are on castrol too....

have not tried the HKS, dunno which one is better?

No.12 01-14-2004 09:34 AM

Hi, I tried Castrol RS and I can say it is pretty smooth, and not expensive too.

I just topped up about 1/2 a 0.5l bottle after 1500km. I changed oil at 1000km. I'm at 2500km now. Must be the hard driving :) For the records I did not use the same brand of oil. I used Shell Helix Ultra, simply because I was at Shell. Ha ha.

Since we are talking about oil, I've also tried Mobil/Esso 8000 and Caltax, but find that Shell V power gives more power. I now pump only Shell V Power.

Cheers!

Can anyone in the Far East help answer these questions for me regarding oil weight? Thanx.

Well, some of the guys here in Spore attended a talk by an ex-Mazda engineer, and he swears by synthetic. There's a thread on that somewhere.

I'm not sure abt the Castrol weight, but the HKS I'm using is 10W-40. Pricey but smooth, supposedly low-ash.

Neon 01-18-2004 11:22 AM

Here here!

hotpot 01-19-2004 02:42 AM

In North America, Mazda recommends using 5W-20. Apparently in Asia, 10W-30 is recommended.
So, Fab8, using 10W-40 is still ok? I hear some even using 20W-50. Isn't that pushing it a bit?

Fab 8 01-19-2004 08:03 AM

Actually, the HKS oil is also used in Japan, as I believe HKS only has 10W-40 for its rotary oil. I haven't had any issues hitting the high notes in my 8 :D Car feels sweeeeet. :p

I don't think 20W-50 will be a problem, maybe slightly less power at the very most, but since rotaries run hot, it probably won't make much difference.
