thinking of buying rx8 but...

hi all

i'm thinking of getting the rx8. cant say i'm a car aficionado but i do love its design and handling. but when i test drove the car from a p.i. it had this strong burning smell. also test drove one at mazda but it had no such problems. should i worry abt the smell? what's causing it?

also, what kind of singapore city driving mileage will i get on this? the salesperson says 8-9 click but i'm sceptical.

thanks in advance!

airworm 02-14-2008 07:34 PM

I do 70% highways and 30% urban, I get a good avg of between 8.8-9.2 for mileage and I rev occasionally every other night.
I got an AT from PI, I do not have any strong burning smell...only thing I smell is the nice sweet leather smell. And besides the design and handling, the sweet sound of the rotary purring every time I start the car and as I wind down the windows to drive slowly, its more than sufficient to be no longer skeptical.

Go get it..

FC, i would say 6-8 km/l more accurate. Burnt smell = normal wen u rev hard as our rotary tends to 'chia' engine oil. Hope tat helps

Mate, if fuel consumption is one of your main considerations, I would really recommend against getting the RX8. One of the excitements with driving this ride is reving and pushing this car hard. I don't do that very often though and my split is 60% highway 40% city. With that, my consumption averages about 6.7km/L.

Like het mentioned, the burning smell is not unusual. Some of us get it, some don't. Alot depends again on how hard you push your ride. Having said that, the burning smell is not an indication that something is wrong with the ride.

thanks for the replies. read somewhere that burning smell could be cos of some insulation coating that comes with new cars and will wear off. is this true?

p.s. pretty set on getting it. just want to be singaporeany sure :)

Hi, I am driving a 6spd MT which I got from a PI. As mentioned, some get the smell, some don't. I didn't smell anything funny yet as I don't really rev my car (max 4k plus rpm, for now!). Fuel consumption wise, I am getting about 8km/l with 70% highway & 30% city driving.

Like what Fugu said, if you are concern about fuel consumption, this is not the car for you. But think of it this way, you get the fun and power from this car but paying a road tax of 1.3l.

Cheers!!

Yes, it's a film on the exhaust. It goes away after a week or so.

LoneWolf 02-15-2008 05:54 AM

Burning smell fr exhaust used to get it during 1st 1 or 2 months. Nowsadays still get it after hard rev too.

60% highway 30% city 10% idling, wif heavy ICE setup, 18inch, on shell 98, did a remap & occasionally rev, now can maintain between 7.8km/l - 8.2km/l.

Go get one B4 new facelift launch. U won't regret...:)

burnt smell? Either the car (new car) is with new mid/rear silencer or 'decat'ed or exhaust wrapped with new thermo wrap. Else something is not right.

bro,

the new facelift is fugly! share the same design characteristics
as the new mazda 6.

gone are the rotary crests and the side fenders, a loss of the rx8 character.

the fugliest is the steering wheel manz!

the oni thing nice is the back led tailights. the recardo seats look sharp too
but also at the expense of the rotary crest seats which are just as nice.

just my 2 cents worth n personal opinion.

Not sure the price though but u can chk do a search in this forum which links to some pics of the new facelifted 8 but like wat Bro BlackEight mentioned most of the distinct RX8 features are 'lifted' esp those rotary & fender trade marks.

U hv to decide for urself...

Happy shopping!

Cheers!
