Review: 2nd Radiator Fan Mod by MG

Most know that heat is one of the worst enemies for the 8's longevity, and i've been hunting for something that helps solve this problem for quite a while.

My major pain previously was that avg temps on my FI car was 100/105 degC (oil/water). At one stage, it shot up to 110/120 before the engine just died and showed a CEL after spirited driving.

The mod by MG uses a Mazda radiator fan positioned strategically over a portion of your radiator, and then wired up directly - essentially doubling your fan-assisted cooling efficacy. This mod effectively reduces your water temp permanently by a minimum of 5 degC.

The results:

- Temp after 30mins idle, and 15mins of back-to-back 0-100 sprints/stops: 100/94

- Avg cruising temp at 8.30am in medium peak traffic on ECP 25mins after startup: 90/84

- Avg mini-sprint temp at 9am with intermittent stops: 98/92

- 5 mins idling after medium aggressive driving+cruising before parking: oil temps steady at 98, water temps reduced from 94 to 88

The results - at least for me - was short of spectacular. For extremely aggressive driving at perhaps full throttle 50% of the time, temps won't go past 100, where in the past it easily exceeds 110 for both oil and water. While this mod is really meant to help bring down water temps, the overall effect is that it helps brings down oil temps and more importantly, provides a ceiling where oil temps won't exceed 100degC.

This is perhaps the single most price-performance efficient cooling mod you can have for your money.

u mean MG only reposition the radiator fan? Nothing added or changed?

what u mean by 2nd fan mod? what is the first?

how much is the damage?

post some pic.. hehe thanks..

It's an additional fan that complements your stock rad fan.

Sorry no pix, from engine bay cannot see. Must hoist up, mebbe next time

is your car equipped with 2nd oil cooler? after the 2nd fan mod, it shows significant improvement of your water temp.

gfoo 01-21-2008 11:23 PM

no, my car 4AT no 2nd oil cooler - so there is limited benefit for oil temps, but it is still offset and derived from benefits of lower water temp - oil/water temps are functions of each other

from what i know there are 2 stock fans behind the radiator closer to the engine. so this additional fan will be place in front of the radiator at the aircon condensor and then blowing into the aircon condensor and into the radiator?

So we can see it when viewing from the front of the car? i cant see that there is enough space to put a 3rd fan behind the stock ones.

also, haven't you already done a mod to turn on the fans earlier by the ECU?

CoupeM 01-21-2008 11:44 PM

Yup...I believe the fan is in front of the radiator. I have a fren who FI his car and did the same thing years ago. It realli significantly lowers the water temp. I been toying with the idea or either an extra fan or water spray or both for awhile now.

yes, fan viewable from the front bumper. car ecu when NA had RE ecu remap, FI has specific RE ecu remap as well. i believe that whatever the case, this will work very well for NA as well

i think your aircon should be colder as well. :)

i was thinking of adding fan on the oil cooler..

rhudayar 01-22-2008 11:11 PM

so far, all questions have been answered except for the price damage of this mod.
2 guys have asked but no replies to it yet. So here's a 3rd one.
How much is the mod?
I am interested in reducing the temp as well.

thks

For NA car... all u need is to map the ECU.. no need to add a fan.

Additional fan is more for forced induced cars who need more cooling.... as the water temp goes up very fast..

of cos if u wan it for NA, oso can...

NA = Non-Automatic?

NA=Normal aspirated - i.e. non Forced Induction (FI) like Turbo charged (TC) or supercharged (SC)
