Radiator Warning Light on

Hi all,

Anyone has any experience with the radiator symbol warning light coming on and off? Significantly the water/coolant temperature is normal - gauge pointed at normal temp range. Car feels OK, not overheated. When I check engine bay, coolant level normal. Not boiling over either.

When it comes on I usually turn off the a/c and cruise gently until it goes off. Sometimes is comes on and goes off by itself.

Any similar experience out there? BTW my RX8 is one of the oldest on the road in Singapore - Sept 2003. Oil in use - Idemitsu RE 10W30.

i had this before, so is a few member here, there is 3 senario so far.

1. reserver tank sensor is dirty (bottom of the tank)

2. the float inside the tank is stuck by crystalized coolant. we knock on the tank and the light go offf. hahaha

3. too much coolant?

hey,

i think a person or two here will vouch for me... seems as this is becoming a common problem.. the sensor in the coolant tank fails...

i have just seen the problem at 72k miles..

bad news, the tank and the sensor are one unit. no one has found a work around yet..

beers

I've experienced the same issue. I've been told by a friend who is a Mazda Technician that they are replacing the coolant tank under warranty.

Doesn't seem to be a serious ussue as any time the light has come on I've seen no change in temperature (per aftermarket gauges) nor is my coolant level low.

check ur coolant reservior and the areas ard the coolant reservoirs.... any signs or coolant splashing out?? and water stains? check ur coolant reservoir cap area.. any cracks... Do you have to keep topping up water?

all no, then maybe sensor spoil. Sensor no individul part, have to change ur reservoir tank together. However now singapore no stock for this part.

worse case is radiator is gone. but thats worse case scenario.

Hi Ringer, my guess would be that the sensor in the coolent tank is faulty. Bad news is the parts are not sold individually but as a set ( coolent tank and sensor ) and it will set you back by about SGD $180 excluding labour.

Anyway where are you getting your Idemitsu RE 10W30 and $?

The good news is that your problem came after almost 4 years... mine gone after 18months... and when I was still under 40,000KM... :(

Thank you all for your inputs.

My tank and radiator are OK, no leaks no cracks. I think I might have too much coolant. I will try reduce level to see if any improvement, before I try anything major.

SilverArrow8, I did my last service at MG, Idemitsu RE syn package @S$180. Leftover 3/4 litre for top ups.

yup i have it too. have unplugged the switch. didnt want to pay SGD$170 just for a stupid sensor. will use scan gauge to monitor the water temp. 170 better invested in that that a silly replacement tank.

theboy 06-26-2007 08:54 AM

when it come out, bang it. it works for a member here. thats mean the float is stuck.

mkl22 06-26-2007 08:37 PM

no use. after a while it will get stuck again. flushed the tank and same thing. gave up already.

my coolant cap area broke last time which resulted in loosing coolant...had to replace the whole tank :icon_no2:

Ringer.
I first started having this problem during this past summer, when running with AC on at 4 grand. when I turned the AC off the lamp went out 1 or 2 mins later.
I checked coolant levels and for leaks. I found no problems.
Now I am getting it when I accelerate to 7 grand and it takes 3-5 mins for it to go out.
My engine temp stays at normal and there is no performance problem either.

Did you get any positive results from reducing the coolant in the overflow tank?
