Newbie

Dear Rx8 owners, I have recently come into ownership of an Rx8.

It saddens me however that I know almost absolutely nothing about Mods, breaking in the car, or how to improve it's performance.

It is in auto-gear, and it's colour is red.

I would appreciate any advice, given to a professed car-idiot like myself. I do not wish to see my Rx 8 go into ruin because of any ignorant folly of mine.

Cheers.

Hi! Most important thing about RX is maintenance/servicing. Be religious about it! Find a workshop/garage that knows what thy're doing.

For mods, look at Mazdaspeed. Or wait awhile, new stuff coming out from many different after market big names.

For break in, wait until 2,000 km. Don't redline before this (btw u can by using the 'tiptronic').

Don't worry about performance until u're used to the RX. It's not that fast, but certainly not slow either!

And above all, have fun & welcome!

Many Thanks .

By the way, just out of curiousity, has anybody ever turbocharged a rotary engine ?

RX-7 was turbo'd.

After market turbo kits are available, buit BIG issue with reliability. Rumour is that the next 8 will be twin turbo'd.

8amzai. welcome.. If I might add, & u will get many differing views on this, but dont baby the car too much.,. more importantly make sure u are driving at different revs. I personally think thats the way to break it in. After the initial 700-1000 km redlining it -sometimes-is pefectly fine. the engine can be thrashed a bit. happy rotaring

Neon 12-09-2003 06:55 AM

Thrashed the MF! Dont worry! ROTARY RULEZ!!!!!

ok just jokin. i redlined mine at exactly 1001km after first servicing. Wuz tailgating a fully Modded BM. (Tailgating is dangerous....)

CHEERS n WELCOME

hahaha you guys are cool man, thanks. I didn't expect car owner forums to be that receptive.

"Rumour is that the next 8 will be twin turbo'd"

You mean, the Rx8 version 2 ?

Or rather installing twin turbo's in the current rx8 ?

Thanks alot to everyone again, I will be skimming the old threads when time allows. Cheers !

Hi again. Sorry if me not clear.

There are several rumours which include:
1. The 2005 RX-8 (to be launched next year) will be twin-turbo'd.

2. The 2005 auto RX-8 will have 5 speeds.
It is possiblle to instal twin-turbo (i.e. after market) on the RX-8; but apparently A LOT else has to be done. There will also be the issue of reliability. There r pple who believe that the RX-7 (we call it Efini) was a casualty of this. At any rate, it makes the rotary even harder to repair (i.e. turbo on top of it).

BTW, do u have a sunroof?

Efini is not another name for the RX-7. Below is a explaination borrowed from another thread.

Originally posted by Senseny/bureau13 Efini, was the high line division that Mazda was trying to get to compete with Lexus and Infinity. Mazda did have several Efini models in Japan. The third genRx7 was badged Efini for part of its Japanese life but not all of it. I believe the 929 and Cosmo (3 rotor) were also part of the line. The symbol is very cool and kind of looks like a rotor with lightning (actually the Japanese symbol for infinity I was told). The line was never launched in the US--obviously. Some of my info here could be wrong, but this is what I have been told, so thought I'd share.

Efini was NOT another name for the RX-7...it was another name for Mazda!

Ringer 12-09-2003 11:29 PM

I thought the name Mazda wanted to use in the USA market to compete with Lexus/Infinity/Acura was Amati??

Died somehow even before they started. They asked for it with a name like Ah, Mati!!

Guys ,, my 2 bits having lived there & been to the Rx 7 dealers. Enfini was a sub brand of mazda as well as a sales channel . The Enfini sold a few other cars besides the 7 , the names of which are obviously different abroad (like the cappela & familia.). The Miata for e.g was sold through another brand called the Eunos- (In japan no one calls it the miata but the eunos)Subsequent restructring & triming down of mzda dealerships have now eliminated the ENFINI channel & now its called something along the lines of Kantomazda. In the 80's the 7 was called Savannah.

8anzai 12-10-2003 07:53 PM

Mr Rabbit,
Nope, no sunroof.

Mr Rabbit 12-10-2003 09:28 PM

Interesting. So how/why did the last 7 get called 'Efini' in SG???
