LSD and DSC.....
 

Hi! as some of you guys may already know, i'm interested in getting RX8 210ps Auto in the near future.

now considering between the Type E and Basic version.

I'm leaning more towards Type E mainly due to the DSC and LSD function. But on the other hand, with the cost savings from getting a Basic version, i can jolly well upgrade the rims/tyres, bodykit, accessories, leather seats etc....

my big question is : is DSC and LSD really worth the extra $$ (excluding the other additional features that comes with Type E)

Any RX8 owners with experience on the car ahndling with and without the DSC/LSD function care to comment??

My take is that since RX8 is a RWD, DSC/LSD will help with tricky situations resulting from the RWD setup..... but on the other hand, if my RX8 is only gonna handle 210ps, will it make a difference??

DSC and bigger brakes are well worth the money.
DSC will make a difference on wet/slippery roads. The low power version has actually more torque, so it is as prone to RWD friskiness as the 23x ps version. But the auto slush box should reduce this effect. I'd still go with DSC though ;)

I will definitely not forego the DSC function myself as it had came in useful for me on a few occasions on this car as well as my previous BMW. U don't even need to drive hard to see how useful DSC is, just go to any underground car park on a rainy day when the surface is wet and you will realise the usefulness esp when u r turning. The leather seat on the Type E also comes with a "hard-shell back" which i do not think the local aftermarket shop can provide. It also has ribbed patterns running along both sides and in the middle. The factory also will not allow the sunroof or sports suspension to be fitted to a basic model. It also does not have cruise control and electric powered seat.

I did a 95 on the road leading into ECP located at Bedok Exit. I was pushed by an EG! Thought i was going to buang already but guess wad?! Tuick tuick tuick! DSC kicked in and i all encountered was a slight throw of my backside before resuming on at full throttle!

Heehee. Ok the details...read on.

It was red light. I am on the road leading towards Upper East Coast where the Mobil will be on the left. Think its a white EG, pulls behind me. From my rear view mirror,i can only see his head! It was that low! I did a 4500 first gear and decided to see if hes following. True enuff hes head is exactly the same size in my rear view mirror. Thought hes rushing for time, did not want to do a 9250 on 2nd at that point. 4500 then 3rd. Hes obviously still there. Decided to full throttle on 3rd but low torque at that stage, shortly after left turn for ECP already and dats how my story goes........:D

Hey Neon, do u happen to live along Upp Eat Coast? Me at Bayshore Rd and I see many 8s along Upp East Coast all the time. At where I am staying, there r 3 RX8s including mine.

Yup, used to stay there just near Mobil. I see a red one always opposite my house.

hmmm... seem like the type E is for me coz my wife will also be driving the car (she still L-plate now..sigh)... just have to add on the bodykits later loh...... but for safety is the most important issue here:D

If you get DSC, you can switch that off when you are seriously having fun...

I normally drive with it off but when I want to be lazy... have it on.

Hi, does the normal RX-8 have any form of traction control? I know my ols BMW 325Ci had ASC+T and the driving conditions were alot worse in Canada, snow + sleet etc. Never really needed DSC to keep the car in control.

In the UK where every 8 gets DSC we get a free pro-drive track day.

Part of this day is spent on a skid pan, an absolute scream, but it realy shows the DSC well.

Braking with half the car on 'ice' and half on normal road and it stops with no fuss.

Correcting slides on ice , with no fuss (lots of fun with DSC off).

Braking from 90mph with no hands on the wheels, no fuss.

The DSC is an absolute incredible device for normal road safety and can be switched off if you want to to stupid stuff.

i have looked at the video on the DSC function... must say the difference quite significant!

looks like i have to get it no matter i have to eat bread and water the next few months.... cannot compromise safety to save cost....
will not forgive myself if something happen to my wife (touch wood!) just because i din get the DSC......;)
