Do any of you have LED tail light installed?

Veil_Side 05-27-2007 12:55 PM

Thanks, this is the 3rd brake light. Do they sell LED rear light assembly?

Veil_Side 05-29-2007 05:58 AM

so sorry, didnt read properly. my bad :spank:
im not aware of any LED rear light availbility

Mine are LED... Turn, Stop, and Center.

Dayum... Whereabouts did you get those and how much did that set you back?

I especially love that brake light with the RX-8 emblem. Sexy.

SE3P_HKG 06-03-2007 11:27 AM

Well.. Mr. Monster never replied!

Bulbs are here: http://autolumination.com/7443_7440.htm I used their 7443 style - 18 High Powered Wide Angle SMT LEDS ($25). I used these because they use unique flat faced, high power LEDs all around the sides to show well in the OEM reflector (see round brake pic above). These appear to be the best/brightest around from all the different vendors right now for use in the stock reflector IMO. These required a inline diode to work (have 2 levels of brightness) w/the brake light on.

For the amber turn signals, I tried to save a couple $ and got a cheaper bulb, the 7440 style "The wedge Matrix II LED" $20. I'm happy with it (it's not quite as bright as the SMTs, using 'normal' LEDs). Doing it again, I'd spend the extra $5 for the SMTs. These required a balancing pwr resistor to work w/the OEM blinker module.

The center is a Autotronics STL-72RS (Advance Auto Parts $21) brake light assembly with approx 10 LEDs in it mounted behind the OEM face lens and using Polak's stencil. It's brilliant bright!

spin9k - i'm a noob maybe - but an "in line diode" - what is it - what does it do - does it come with the bulb - how hard is it to install...thx

As purchased the LED brake light worked Ok as a running light (low brightness), but went out completely if you stepped on the brake. Confused, but curious, I discovered either brightness level worked by itself, but when installed in the socket and both LED leads had 12v applied (lights ON - step on brake) the whole thing turned off. IOW the RX-8 circuitry wasn't 100% compatible with the bulb. To fix this I soldered a small diode (IN4001/3 or eqiv http://www.radioshack.com/search/ind...gkw=diode&sr=1 ) in-line with the positive lead (black/yellow wire) coming from the brakelamp socket. This effectively isolated the two circuits (taillamp & brakelamp) as far as the LED lamp was concerned and everything works fine. It's like a 10 min job for both lights w/a small soldering iron and some wire cutters and a bit of shrink-wrap tubing to cover it.

A diode is an electrical one way valve, so voltage can only flow one way, and not the other, as with most electronic components, it has an anode and cathode lead, anode is positive and cathode is negative

There is a stripe on one end of the diode. The anode on a diode is the one on the UNstriped end. The voltage will flow through the diode from the unstriped end, and come out of the striped end, but not the other way round.

You need to connect the diode so the end with the stripe is attatched to one terminal and the unstriped attatched to the other terminal, you MUST have the diode wired so that the correct terminal receives the 12 volts , and the other terminal is the earth.
