HY Recall Experience
 
Hi guys and girls,

After reading so many posts and opinions about the RX8 recall, I've decided to post my personal experience on the recall:

After reading about it on the Mazda website and seeing my serial there, I decided to call my PI, HY:

Me: "Eh boss, I hear there's a recall ar. My serial there also leh."

HY: "Orr...dun worry la. We obligated to handle the recall wan. Soon will be sending out the letters to you all for checkup, then if found got prob will rectify for you. What's your car number, I help you check."

Me: "Orr...Mine's SXX2199X. oei, I no need pay money wan right?"

HY: "No need no need. It's part of our service mah."

Me: "Ho seh la" :D

Soon, I received a printed letter from HY on the Recall #1489 and ask me go book appointment with their workshop Sportswagen. In it, there's a line saying "all parts and labour will be absorbed by us" (us being HY). I thought "ho seh liao!" :D

So I called up SW to book appointment.

Me: "Eh boss, I receive letter to go checkup leh. How to do ah?"

SW: "Orr..no prob. Anytime you free you come down. Very fast wan, around 20mins check."

Me: "Har, then what you do? Check only ah?"

SW: "Orr...we first check your car. Then if necessary, you need to book second appt with us to rectify it. Currently we don't have the parts so need to come second time. But you come down first and we check first lor."

Me: "Oei, need to pay or not?"

SW: "No need la, all covered fren"

Me: "Ho seh la" :D

So I booked the apptment and went down. At the workshop, they jack up my car and inspect:

Me: "Oei brudder, you inspect simi har?"

SW: "Orr...you see this wire, we check whether got giu-jue (shrinkage). Yours manual so not so bad. Only got one wire. Auto wan more shiong cuz alot of wires need to check. Then you come look here. See this shielding (looks like aluminium foil), yours new car normally no prob. They got put, if dun put, we will have to order and put it in for you. What we do is you see this and this area, we take out the tank and remove blah blah blah (lost liao...) and put in the shielding the put everything back"

Me: "Orrrr...."

Performs some other under carriage checks...
SW: "Ok la. Looks like yours no prob, no need second appt. Pass"

Me: "Wah, good good. Thank you leh bro."

SW: "One more thing, driving tat time dun cheong humps or bums. Cus usually if cheong, may kana these parts and the wire so will damage lor."

Me: "Yes sir. Thank you leh"

Note - Exact conversation content may vary slightly. :p

Ok, so that's my experience. So far I think my experience with PI not bad la. Good or not, serious or bo chap, you all ownself judge la. :)

Something on your undercarriage must have told him you cheong humps... :p

Erm.. I thought even if no wire problem still must install heat shield, to prevent future problems. Now no problems doesn't mean that will not have in the future.

And the second thing has something to do with the suspension.

I am no mechanic; just my two cents.

Better double confirm to be sure.

What i heard from my PI that did the recall, mazda actually notified them and that they will pay the garage the labour charges and provide the heat wrap for free.
As for the work that has to be done, (correct me if i am wrong) they need to take the fuel tank out to check for warping and also install the heat wrap for you. Only some specified models will have to tune the ECU.

Somebody correct me please if I'm wrong:

I got the impression is that the recall is minimum an installation of the heatshield. The fuel tank may not have warped now, but another few month/years down the road??

I get the feeling the PIs workshops may not have the expertise to install the heatshield as after speaking to someone at Garage R, they told me it's a lot of work to install the heatshield and it takes almost half a day, maybe some of these PI workshops just cant be bothered to go through all the hassle and yet they can still charge Mazda for labour.

Anyone bought their cars from Garage R?? Anyone just went for the inspection and they claim dat's it? only visual inspection is required???

Apparently they inspect first... then order the parts... HY people will call the people back for the installation...

Personally I think they don't what they are looking for. the guy that inspected my car was admiring the autoexe under carriage brace and the leds....

Unfortunately, admire is all they do... It's a service recall to install the heatshield and reflash the ECU if necessary and that's what MM did when I sent mine in. If all the PI workshop did is "inspect" (or admire in lohsk's case), then frankly to me the PI is just pure wayang. Just putting on a dog and pony show, but doing absolutely nothing. If your car's VIN is within the range, then Mazda deems that the heatshield and/or replacement ball joint needs to be installed. Not just a visual inspection.

i dunno la. they did told me that the heatshield (the alu thing mentioned above) is installed and showed me. as mazda released the numbers for all "possible" cars affected, it does not mean that all cars need installing. whether true or not, they bluff me or not i have neither the technical know-how or willingness to fork out the money for another workshop to tear down my car to check to know for certain lor (plus the fact tat even if i pay these workshop, whose to know that they HAVE the technical knowledge to know what they looking for).

end-of-day, just sharing my experience with you all la. like i mentioned, whether enuff or not, u all go decide. how u all want to handle the issue also up to u guys la.

I decided to go with PIs and if i were to spend the next 10 yrs worrying whether they are good enuff then quite hard right. :) to me at least, the process of preliminary checks on the car gives me peace of mind.

The problem is that if they just bo chap and do "visual inspection" and never install heatshield, wat if there are other problems that surfaces months later?? If they gonna just wayang and see see look look, I tink I'll lodge a complaint to LTA. I cant afford having something melt down in my car due to the heat and I have to pay a hefty cost to rectify it...

Since Mazda Japan is footing the recall costs, why cant these people just do a good job?

Another conspiracy theory :

Since these PI cars are JDM and are actually Japanese cars dereg after like 3 days in Japan, maybe the recall only apply in Japan and the PIs cannot claim Mazda Japan for the rectification costs??

Anyone who has a recall on the ball-joints yet kanna a visual inspection from the PI's workshop??

got my letter from wow and took my car down for the recall.
apparently it's quite an eleborate job :eek:
i drove in without any booking thinking it's a simple fix from previous postings

a black 8 was there with it's fuel tank, pipes and other stuff strip bare for the recall work which i was told need at least a full day.
plus the recall parts are here for every affected rx8 sold by wow, regardless of present condition so no inspection is needed, just do it was what the workshop was told!!! how's that for service :D

I've gone for my inspection... and nothing to be donw... somehow I still get the feeling that the workshop just wayang inspect and say no need to do anything...

The boss also mentioned to me that the parts for the recall have to be paid by the PI themselves and not paid by Mazda Japan as I've expected...

Still got a niggling feeling that they're just taking the easy way out... can anyone confirm if the heatshield is a compulsory job?? Coz my chassis number was one of those affected, but the guy said it's already there and there's no way I can prove anything... :(

Looks like they are doing a good job :D My colleagues euro R was recalled last year and GR did a great job making sure every unit was done properly. The cost is borne by the PI by the way. Heard good things abt WOW (although more ex than others) but if they built their reputation by solid support, then they are going places.

Too bad I cant say the same of mine...

Anyone's 8 from HY and they actually did more than just inspection??
