Defi gauges

Hi pple,

Thought of installing 3 defi gauges (just to look good in the interior) at Monster Garage! Cost slightly over 1k. Has anyone done so and any complications? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thks

watoke 08-30-2006 09:10 PM

Hi Wen Pin,

There wudn't be any complication. I have 6 defi gauges on my dash. So, what you think? :yelrotflm

wen pin 08-30-2006 09:20 PM

Walau! 6 ah! U go tracking or wat! Where you had them installed?

watoke 08-30-2006 11:55 PM

well, i used to go track when I was driving the DC5r. :smoker:
I fixed it up also mainly for track (and deco lah), but apparently due to my work commiment and overseas assignment, i really finding hard to get time to go track. Hopefully, I can do it one of the day :fingersx:

Defi gauges.... damn zhun in measurements le... no harm fixing up there... at least we hv peace of mind of seeing there... not much complications.

wen pin 08-31-2006 12:06 AM

ok man... ...will get it fix soon...thks a mil guys...

whitedragon 08-31-2006 02:25 AM

Me thinking of it too. Do u guys put on the center of the dash? Btw which three is normally put? Oil temp, water temp, oil pressure? Will it void MM warranty? Thanks

PitchBlaC 08-31-2006 02:46 AM

I've got a question for those who fixed up the water temp and oil pressure. Do you think it is really necessary to fix these 2 gauges since the car already have them.

How much is the differences in reading between the stock gauges and defi. I would like to know. Thanks.

wen pin 08-31-2006 02:55 AM

Hi whitedragon,
The 3 gauges as you'd mentioned is the normal stuff if you dont intend to go tracking. Spoke to darren of MG. Says take half day job cos need to drain the original coolant and replace with another brand, Preston. Not sure if this is appropriate. Their current gauges come in amber red. I'm waiting for the latest type which comes in blue but a higher price. MG will revert when the stock arrives. As with the warranty nd to chk with MM.

hi wen pin, i think there is a misunderstanding. dun have to drain ur coolant. However note that ur coolant will leak due to the installation of the hose joint. Dun worry, on monster's end, they will top up for u.

Of cos, if u wan to change ur coolant, we are using prestone.

PitchBlaC, It did occurred to me too as you rightly pointed out. I'm told defi reads more accurately than stock. I'm taking this with a pinch of salt tho. Only those who have installed can probably enlighten us. HELP!

do note that the blue face defis that u r toking abt only comes in 52mm. Primarily targeted for the US markets, it does not need a control unit to work. And it cannot connect to the defi link system....

generally, those stock gauges are pretty useless. they are not designed to move over a range of values on normal operation conditions. broadly, by the time they move, it would have been too late. defi will give you actual readings and you can monitor and take preventive measures should "personal" thresholds are crossed.

sandman369 08-31-2006 06:02 AM

just to add that, in fact, any proper gauge will do the trick, not juz defi.

But how fast does the defi meter responds compared to the stock ones? And the differences in reading?

i couldn't agree better

defi will register readings a min or 2 from idle
under city driving conditions, e oil temp is about 90ish
while constant high revs above 6000 for 15min can push e temp to 115
defi will respond within seconds and during e cool down lap readings can drop to a 100 within a min and all these while e stock gauge stays put

if u tracked e gauges are good to have if u dun they are great center piece

Gee. Thanks for the info. Think I gonna strip out my stock meter and put a defi one in its place, if that can be done. Hee

according to the defi website, it's a direct link between sensor and gauge, and control functions are not available. unlike the BFs with defi control, for the blue gauges, you cant set the warning peak (electronically) nor can you record the readings. peak indication is set manually with the bezel (like a traditional dive watch).

i vaguely recalled someone mentioned before one can change the colour of the BFs (from red to white and vice-versa), not sure if blue is possible tho.

Eh?? Defi BF gauges now come in Red, White and Blue.

Those blue ones running without link control are Blue racer gauges meant for US market.

celeste84 09-01-2006 10:43 AM

defi japan have officially release the blue defi bf which required the control unit. just like the red and white wants..
