Burning Smell Near Rear Tyre
 

Hey guys

Just wondering if anyone encounters the same problem....it's quite a strong burnt smell near the back of my right tyre...

could be some plastic bag got stuck and melted on your exhaust....it's better to take a look

Hmm so far nothing found stuck...the burnt smell only appears occasionally, not all the time. I remembered two weeks ago it was there, then dissapeared....when i got the mechanic to check, they also can't re-create or trace the burning smell.......

this morning i was late and drove very very fast, when i parked my car the burning smell was there again. Urgh!

The only way to find out is to come for meetups for the rest of us to smell in person.... If both you and the mechanic can't find anything, I suspect it's the normal smell you get when you drive hard, or something got caught between your brake pad and rotor?

I experience the same thing too.. it smells like burnt plastic.. I think its normal. No problems whatsoever..

It could be very possible it comes from the hard driving of your tyres and end up having a minor burn on your rear tyre. Ours is a rear wheel drive car mah, so its normal that the rear is running harder than the front. :yelrotflm

i dont think she ever drives hard....oops, did i mention "she"?

I noticed this yesterday night after I drove home and retreiving something from the boot after i parked the car.
It did not register to me as a burning smell, rather more like a the smell of a hot iron operating at max capacity. It definitely did not smell like burnt paper, rubber or plastic.

And When I trace the source of this smell of "hot iron", it came from my exhaust.
I put my nose near to it and there was this very hot air coming out from it and with it, the "hot iron" smell.

I think this is rather normal for the 8 as it generates lots of heat.
Does everyone have the same experience?

Lucky you didn't touch it with your nose or you'd be noseless right now.

And for Ardenz......how old is your car? And............if you ran it REAL hard as you say, then next time see if it's really by the tire or is it the exhaust......but don't touch it!

i had this problem before. it was BAD Catalyc converter.

About 3plus years old..i just changed tyres and there seems to be no burning smell anymore. :lol2:

But the best thing is: i've clocked 420km and low fuel indicator light still has not appeared!!! Yay!!!:lol:

Mine has done this constantly for a year since I bought it with 13,000 miles. It smells like burning rubber. I mention it everytime I take it in to the Mazda dealer for an oil change. FIrst time they said they found a plastic bag melted to the cat. The grinded it off, but the smell never went away. I think it is the exhaust burning away the undercoating. A couple times while sitting in a traffic jamb, it has gotten really bad - almost to the point of having to turn off the car and leaving it. We ahve really got to figure this out - too many of us are experiencing the same problem. I noticed one service bulletin required additional heat protection at the gas tank...

I notice a smell of burning rubber too. Mind you i have my winter tires on. No melting on the tires either. Initially thought the winter tires were bigger and maybe rubbing somewhere..no luck yet though. Still lookin.

yeah i had the burning smell again earlier today when i stepped hard to overtake an irritating wannabe. really wished i know what causes the smell! :banghead:

I am having a similar problem, I am getting a burnt/hot smell from the rear driver's side tire. Specifically from around the tire, coming more from the wheel well than the actual tire. It appears strongest from around the wheel (not from the wheel though). It is also isolated to the driver's side rear tire. I have heard some people having issues of of plastic bags getting stuck but a visual inspection of the car just sitting on the ground doesnt reveal anything.

Its an '07 that I got in July and has about 12k miles. The smell just started this last week. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same smell, but only after a bit of spirited driving. Could this be related to the rear diff? Mine seems to lock up early when hitting the throttle (not WOT though) out of a corner.

im actually getting this too....but i did just recently put all seasons on the car...

I wouldn't have any idea if i do get it... something's wrong with my nose lately. I haven't smelt anybody's fart including my own in the last 3 mths, but most other smells are still there. Maybe that's a good thing..
