Brake Problem

Dear forumers,

I just returned from a 2 week USA trip. Even though my wife took my RX8 out a couple of times during my absence, that is not enough to keep the brakes from getting rusty.

My brakes stutter badly on light and moderate braking. Smooth only on hard braking. The brake rotors no longer look rusty all over but there are definitely some visible "pitted" patches.

Anyone ever encountered and dealt with such a problem before? I am hoping it will go away with another few days of use and perhaps some hard braking, before I take it in to my dealer's workshop.

BTW I did not spot any RX8s in New York and St Louis in the 2 weeks I was in the US. Drove a couple of rental Ford/Mercury

Sorry to hear that

Sorry to hear about your problem with your brakes. I haven't collected my car yet but i did experience what u mentioned with my current cars, Honda Stream n my other half's Toyota Rav4, especially after prolonged period of idleness (>7 days). The problem usually goes away after some driving with moderate braking. Sometimes, the problem can be so bad (Rav4 with the hand brake engaged), that the car can even refuse to budge after gear is engaged. i then have to accelerate harder than usual to "dislodge"it in order to move off. Btw, i found a product on the Mazda website n is wondering if it will help or is it just for cosmetic purpose. Keep us updated alrite! Best wishes.

Hi. U may want to sand it with sand paper. If it doesn't improve then send her in for grinding.

And pls be VERY careful how u drive until it's sorted. Best of luck!

Haven't encountered such a problem with my 8, but this is a bit similar to the rust that results if you spray lots of water when washing the rims, and not driving the car for a day or two after that. But yours sounds like the rust got in deeper into the disks. Moderate braking should get rid of the problem hopefully. Good luck.

Yup, agree with FAB

Mine has some rust stains too especially on the circumference of the discs. I usually spray lots of water when i wash the baby.....
But so far no prob wif them brakes yet....

GD LUCK

Thanks guys for your advise.

I am happy to report that after applying brake cleaner and wiping with super sponge the problem has almost disappeared. Hope another few days of use and perhaps another application of the brake cleaner/super sponge will restore brakes to orig condition.

dru8999, the product you showed is cosmetic. I have come across similar in different colours. Not a brake cleaner.
