Before anyone says the 8 is weak, read this.

I posted this in another thread because an ignoramus posted that the 8 is a weak car.

Manufacturers usually states hp figures at crank and under controlled test environments. When we actually dyno a car, we measure wheel hp and this is usually lesser due to lossess in drivetrain.

Sometimes people forget that the 13B is only 1300cc naturally aspirated and pumping 210hp at crank, whereas the best 4 stroke honda 1600cc b16c pumps 170hp. World of difference right? Anyway different technologies but if you are interested in figures thats it.

And rotaries can have real high rev limits as to a comparable class of 4-stroke and gets there faster and more willing too.

I just read about a 600hp rx-7 which is not really that uncommon. The 8 has potential, its a matter of when someone will make a supercar out of one. There are already some fine examples out there...

The 8 was only launched in 2003. The WRX and EVOs around 1991/2. Rotary engines have made way more progress than the conventional engine in the same time span.

cjkim 03-26-2006 12:35 AM

well...
the 8 probably does not make its advertised crank hp anyways.
comparing a honda 1600cc to a 1300cc rotary is like comparing apples and oranges... so pleeeeeease stop comparing them!
revving is the general characteristic of a rotary... your point?
don't get me wrong, i love the rx8, but what's the point of posts like this?

wAtOKek 04-01-2006 02:09 AM

Rx8 has whopping 247 horsepower from a 1.3 liter engine.
Revs uninhibitedly up to 9,000 rpm .That's 50 percent to 100 percent more rpm than most six- or eight-cylinder engines of comparable power. And unlike most of those engines, the rotary feels eager to rev higher and higher until you back off the gas.

probably closer to 215-220
don't get me wrong, i like the 8, but it doesn't make 247.

Until you see the JDM version that is...

lift-intelligent 04-02-2006 01:14 PM

waa can like this compare 1 meh lol
1300 rotary if wan compare to normal engine must x2
so it 2600 with 210hp, nothing great loh =)
dc2 1.8 already got 200 stock liao.

2x engine capacity is only a rule-of-thumb, that is bourne out of post-hoc observation rather than first principles...but i agree, can't really compare directly. The 2 engines utilise the cubic capacity quite differently.

Anyway, i wuz told by an engineer that when car manufacturers build a new platform, to maximise profits and stretch their research expenditure, they will not go straight to the most refined/powerful setup that they can produce. Like the computer industry, they practise planned obsolescence, in that they will initially release a rougher version for sale first, then gradually release more refined versions over time. The Evo is one example, where the 7 is the first iteration of a new platform, and the current 9 is the most refined of the lot, even though they could've made the 7 as good as the 9 right from the start.

It is possible that this is the case with the rx8, especially since it's obvious they built the chassis to handle much more power. (notice i didn't say 'drivetrain' ;) )

Firstly, do you know when you mention engine displacement, whether 2L, 3L or 1.3L, do you exactly know what it means or how it works? :Eyecrazy:

If you do, good on U, if not better not anyhow shoot rubbish out. :cwm27:

No lah...he not fly by night one...he fly by month kind...joined November 05. He started the thread comparing the DC5..SS2 and the RX8...then got one joker come in and say our 8 like praying mantis. *you remember?* harmless one lah.

looking at things...i think he got the DC5 instead of the 8. Whatever makes him happy :) Chill yo!

Emperor 04-03-2006 02:50 AM

I nearly got the DC5 too. Why i got the 8? Loads of reasons. For a few,

-rear wheel drive, so no torque steer
- again rwd, so add power also do not have to think so must about lost of traction on launch
- rwd x3, drift possible, unlikely with a fwd unless you go backwards.
-rwd x4, more value for money than the fwd of the same cost

-rotary, revs faster, higher and happier.
-rotary x3, cheaper road tax

-build quality is poor.

- getting almost as common as a civic

Till now i also say hengheng i never get the DC5.

Emperor 04-03-2006 10:31 AM

The other lucky thing is that because of the suicide doors; i can actually put my baby girl into her rear seat easier.

CoupeM 04-03-2006 11:30 AM

I nearly bought a dc5 also. It was cheaper than a rx8 but in the end....looks still mean alot to me. DC5 does not look as good and still have tat boyracer image. And best part of rx8 is....I only have to pay a 1.3L roadtax...even if it is deem by many as a 2.6 or 3.9 or watever. Lolz

Emperor 04-03-2006 11:38 AM

What turned me off is when the sale person slammed the hatch while i was sitting in the rear, it hit my head. And i do not fancy the fact that i had to shift the front seat to allow access to the rear. Not that i ferry people alot; i use the rear seats to hold my bags and stuff.
