1 sad story, Please Help (Singapore)
 

8th April 07, Sunday night. My cousin 29 yrs old with his girlfriend in his new Mazda 3 met an accident at Scotts Road. This cab having accidentally scratched my cousin's car attempted to hit n run. Thus, my cousin sped up to that bloody cab driver, alighted and demand the cab driver to alight his cab and reason out. Instead of stopping and alighting, the cab driver swerve his cab out of the lane my cousin's car was in and banged my cousin. And now he is lying in the ICU and doctor removed partial of his brain and advised my auntie to give up rather than saving him. The passenger which is a lady, please come out and point out whats the cabbie thinking at that point of time and also one witness actually claimed that the cabbie did bang into him intentionally. The scene was at Scotts Road and I believe theres plenty of witnesses. Eye witnesses please help!

A 30-YEAR-OLD man was fighting for his life in Tan Tock Seng Hospital last night after a traffic dispute along Scotts Road spiralled out of control.
Mr Alex Lim, 30, is in intensive care with severe head injuries sustained after he was allegedly hit by a taxi on Monday night at about 9.30pm.

The swelling was so bad that doctors had to remove part of his brain, his family members told The Straits Times.

Having already been operated on twice, the financial adviser was still unconscious last night.

The taxi driver, who is in his early 60s, was arrested and later released on bail.

He is being investigated for allegedly committing a rash act resulting in grievous hurt.

Mr Lim's girlfriend, Ms Yvonne Lin, was a passenger in his car and claimed to have witnessed the entire incident.

She said they were driving to his home for dinner.

While along Paterson Road near Wheelock Place, Mr Lim's red Mazda 3 was involved in a minor collision with a Comfort taxi.

Both vehicles pulled over farther down the road, alongside Shaw House.

The drivers got out of their vehicles, which had been parked one behind the other, and started 'exchanging words', said Ms Lin, 24, a bank employee.

The dispute apparently unresolved, the taxi driver got back into his taxi and tried to drive off.

'But Alex stood in front to stop him ... He didn't have his particulars yet,' said Ms Lin.

The taxi then started moving off and Mr Lim fell on its bonnet.

Farther down the road, the taxi stopped and he fell off, landing on the back of his head in the left lane of the road.

Ms Lin said she then got out of the car and ran 'quite a distance' towards him.

'He was bleeding very badly from his ears and nose. I was trying to clean up the blood...I was afraid he would choke.

'He was still conscious then. He was just screaming and screaming,' she said.

An ambulance took him to hospital.

A ComfortDelGro spokesman said last night the driver 'will be off the road while investigations are ongoing'.

Ms Lin is now appealing for a female passenger in the taxi to come forward and offer her eyewitness account.

The woman got out of the cab after Mr Lim was hit, she said.

His aunt, among family members keeping vigil in hospital said, crying: 'His mother had prepared his favourite dishes.

'She was waiting and waiting, but he never came home. He lost so much blood.'

i had a same year schoolmate who got hit by a car last year and fell into "vege" state. he passed away few days later in kl. i know how you feel. stay strong.

I had so many close calls with taxis too. Why they have to be like that?

Feel so sorry for the guy. His picture of him in the comatose state is in the papers today.

This is a most unfortunate accident but it's best to have the lady passenger's account as well so that you can understand what actually happen before the Taxi driver went " crazy ". It's only fair for both parties that way.

So sorry but I have not seen the news report on this accident before I posted this.

I pray that your cousin will recover soon.

In what circumstance does it justify the taxi driver committing such a rash and reckless act?

Perhaps none?

I would suggest to write a letter of appeal to the ST forum firstly and then make use of the evening tabloids to appeal for the witness. If the accident happened in the orchard area, there's a high chance it was caught by some CCTV be it the ATM type or those installed by SPF?

Just Word of Advice (if come across such an incident & I touch wood)

Please do not give chase to the driver (culprit) if he/she is not willing to stop, (may endanger other traffic users too), note down the vehicle registration plate number & lodge a "hit & run" traffic accident report.
If there is someone injured in the accident, do quickly called for an ambulance first.

Please stay cool & dun let anger & impulsiveness overrule us. Is just a vehicle & all are covered by insurance. Not worth to cost a life (u & I won't know) over a minor accident or a dispute after all.

Just word of advice......

There is absolutely no rationale for the taxi driver to commit this intentional act of murder, ifI may put it this way. The police is looking at the incident as a rash and negligent act. But under what circumstances does it qualify as a rash and negligent act? The victim was standing right in front of the taxi, in full view of the driver. Yet the driver mowed right into him, fully aware of his actions. This is with intention to murder. Pure and simple. The driver should be sent to the gallows.

Well, under no circumstances should the taxi driver have done that, that's for sure!
However, we should always hear from both sides and not jump the gun before we know the whole truth.
He was definately out of his mind for doing that and he will get his just desserts. What Im saying is that there may be more to the story for the taxi driver to react in that way, afterall he is already 60+ and he should know better.
Meanwhile, we can only do our bit by passing on the info and hope that the female passenger get to see this and step forward and may "pleasehelp"s cousin recover asap.

Quite difficult to press for murder because premeditation and motive must be established and proven beyond reasonable doubt. The driver certainly did not know the victim beforehand and if anything it is indeed a rash and negligant act. Acts of anger at spur of the moment does not equate to murder, even if the guy was standing in front of him. He'll just say he was so angry that he lost it at that moment and not that he had planned to kill the guy.
