Where have all the positive vibes gone?

Just an observation really, a few days ago we all seemed to be positive and enthusiastic about finally getting a date for receiving our cars but now it all seems to be doom and gloom.

I know that the reports of ultra-low mpg are a concern to a few (me included) but just remember the point someone made a while ago. It isn't really about miles per gallon its about smiles per gallon (spg).

The car we have all ordered is a fantastic car to drive and look at, it is innovative and in some respects unique.

Remember it is only a few days until we know when we will get our hands on our cars and only five or so weeks until we will be driving them. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

True. I guess the other thing you have to consider, is the car could have been priced a good couple of grand more expensive, which helps out with the fuel bills a bit!

My comparision is against the 3.2 TT which I considered - 29k. Compare that to the 24.7k I am paying for the RX8, and you have 4.3k to spend on petrol! AT 20mpg (I hope!) I make that about 20,000 miles....

hmm. We should have recieved that letter LAST week. Yet another milestone missed by mazda.

We've just had a petrol proce rise, and people are getting HALF the stated MPG in US/canada.

I'm getting 35mpgish out of my focus. 12mpg out of the RX-8 may be hard to hande, even if it puts smiles on my face.

As said, a big V8 , or huge Bently or something doesnt get that bad milage.

The cars light, and relativly aerodynamic. And 228 BHP isnt that much - something equivelant like the R32 golf or 225TT will probably do the same(performance) for HALF the petrol costs.

I'm not supprised people are worried. I'm also concerned about range on a single tank too. Under 300 miles will be an absolute pain.

It will affect peoples engoyment of the car, and resale values, its what hurt the 2nd gen RX-7 more than anything else.

It's only a positive if you can afford a more expensive car! For me the extra fuel bills could push this car into the too expensive to own territory. I don't want to be negative about it but I do have to be realistic.:(

We love our RX-8!

I guess we've been too busy driving, customizing and detailing:p

Another thing to consider is re-sale.

OK, if you're fairly wedged up (or still living with yer mum/have no life outside yer motor) then the fuel costs aren't gonna be an issue.

But, for us mortals with mortages and shopaholic gf's (how many shoes and handbags do you need woman!), the fuel costs are significant. Furthermore, what's it gonna be like in 2 years. Basic fuel prices are on a constant upward spiral and tax liabaility is never gonna drop. How much will we be paying for a litre of 97RON in 2005/6.

Then, you got to think about trying to sell your 2 year old RX8. The average economy per BHP is going up all the time. We now have Audi's 50mpg 150+bhp FSI petrol engine and even a rumored NSX IMA (Hybrid Electro-Petrol) with potentially 250-300BHP and 30+mpg. How's your 15-20mpg 228BHP coupe gonna look then when you're paying 90+ pence/litre? I'd be real surprised if the 8 makes anywhere near the high residuals being quoted for that reason (and this assumes no more major negative reports on the 8 or Mazda brand).

As for all the positive vibes - well, sound can't travel in a vacuum - and that's just what Mazda have created by their lack of communication.

goodyrx8,

That beemer looks more like a boat than a car ... tried playing with it in paintshop, but can't work out what it is?

Maybe a BMW 2002?!

c170673 10-07-2003 01:34 PM

Looks like a Z8 to me, you can just see the fog lights and the outside edges of the radiator grill.

Chris

RobDickinson 10-07-2003 01:48 PM

Its a Z8. 2002 model.

goodyrx8 10-08-2003 11:32 AM

Yes, it is a 2002 BMW Z8. I took the photo last year with a fisheye lens. Used it as my avatar to keep people guessing.

By the way, we traded the M3 for the RX-8 and a fat check from the dealer. The RX-8 is a much better daily driver for my wife and kids but I steal it away every chance I get.;)

RobDickinson 10-08-2003 01:37 PM

Good choice.

Now trade the Z8 for a 360 modena, the X5 for a rangerover and pick up a lotus elise when they come out over there!

If anyone is still feeling negative, have a good old read of this old thread which should cheer you up....
