Whats all the fuss about the Handbrake?

Hi All,

Been reading the forum for some time now but this is my first post!

Decided that the RX8 is the perfect car for me. I was dreaming of buying an Elise, but seeing as I have a smurf I need to look at something a little more practical! The RX8 fits the bill exactly - sporty, rare plus the all important 4 seats for the 'family' man!!

Can't wait to get one - however 'wait' being the predominant word. Need to get saving!!!!

I've been reading loads of stuff on these forums, and have noticed our American cousins complaining about the handbrake!
Does any one have any close up pics that can show what exactly the problem is?

Another stupid question - does anyone know if the rear seats fold down to increase boot space?

Cheers all,

Darren

The complaint is how high it sits when it is "off." To answer your second question, the rear seats do not fold down. There is however a small 6" x 10" pass through opening for skies and other long skinny items.

I used to live in America, and I can tell you this much about Americans and handbrakes....they have absolutely no idea what they are.

In 'American' it is either called a parking brake or an emergency brake, because that is the only times it gets used.

My american friends would always ask what was wrong when we pulled up to lights and I put the handbrake on. They get through clutches quite fast instead !!!

Maybe I only ever met crazy americans. :p

But I think one of the 'issues' people have is that the handbrake is alongside the gearshift rather than completely behind it. Similar to my Honda CRX in that respect. You just get used to it.

Hmmm...I guess those of us that have no problem getting a manual tranny moving on a hill without burning the clutch will never understand. :D

Looks like I can't get this for my next car then. Wheelchair would fit great if I folded the seats down :(

Looks like it's a Hyundai Coupe for me

nonono get the mazda6 hatch!it's a fantastic car and with the handle in the trunk area to fold the karukiri rear seats it should be much simpler to get the wheelchair in than most other cars:)

Just had a quick look at the Mazda 6, not seen it before - to be honest no Mazda's have ever interested me but the RX8 is stunning. The 6 is a nice car but I'm looking for something that has looks that turn heads. My only other requirements are that it has an automatic option and that theres enough space behind the front two seats :)

Pretty hard to find a car that fits that description though :(
