Hi people, im new to this site! Im not a rx8 owner just yet. But am hoping to be soon! I just wanted to know what kind of problems i should be looking out for! I know people quite easily dismiss rx8s as being quite problematic, but im sure thats just people jumping on the bandwagon! Any suggestions and help, that would be great. Im looking at getting the 231ps btw! Cheers guys... :)

The whole idea about them being problematic stems from the RX-7. Owners payed mechanics (who hadn't a clue about the rotary engine) to add turbos and supers. Because these lads didn't know about the engines, they blew up. Absolutely nothing to do with the original engine itself.

Here's a few tips:::

> Check oil levels every 2nd fill of petrol
> When you start the engine from cold DO NOT drive it or rev it hard until the temperature guage is in the middle of the meter
> Give the engine at least 10 seconds to warm up before even driving it
> Stop/Start procedure: When you start the engine from cold, fully depress the clutch (this has to be done anyway as a safety feature) and DO NOT go near the throttle pedal. If the engine cranks but doesn't start, let go of the key (DO NOT crank it for more than 10 seconds at a time) and wait a few seconds before trying it again. This time fully depress the clutch, crank it and give a slight bit of throttle. You may not have to do this but it is neccessary on some of the 8s. I don't think there's any differentiating which ones it has to be done on but I know it has to be done on mine at times.
> Before turning the engine off, when the car is stationary, bring the revs up over 3000, hold it there and turn off engine before releasing the pedal. This gets any unburnt fuel out of the chambers and prevents flooding.
> Things not to worry about:
- When you take out the dipstick out, if there is a creamy white residue on it, don't worry. It's normal on the rotary. On piston engines it means the head gasket is blown.
- When the car is stationary, if it idles roughly it's normal
- If you're driving along and notice the gear stick wobbling it's normal because the fulcrum is located directly underneath for sharper gear changes
- If the car is sitting outside after being driven up to 5 hours ago and you hear it ticking, it's still cooling down
- When you start the engine from cold the revs go up to 2000, normal and if you're standing at the engine after doing this and you suddenly hear a whirring noise go away, normal
- If you drive hard when the engine is not up to normal operating temperature it will not go above a certain rev range and will "jerk" - consider this the engine telling you "will ya fecken stop, I'm not in the mood just yet"
- Spark plugs are located directly behind the front passenger wheel. Wheel needs to come off in order to access them. You can buy them from RX8Strakes for a fraction of what Mazda are charging (€100 delivered compared to €260+VAT and installation). They are the exact ones you need. Only ever use RE7C-L (Leading) and RE9B-T (Trailing)

hi there thanks for the information i am new to the rx8 i just bought one about 3 weeks ago its great car, but its abit sore on the fuel, and i want to ask you is at what point its best to check the oil level when the engine is cold or warm

I've been a fan of the rx8's for many many years!!

running a 231 currently and love it!!

i recently bought a 192 non runner with a view to rebuilding the engine as a project. I hate the fact so many of these are broken because it seems such a waste of a great car.

I really went to town on reading up etc on problems, causes and solutions and took the dive and bought one,

got the engine out, no problems at all, split the engine, replaced the apex seals as these were shot, put it all back together & then hit a problem...

I was hoping to use my existing 231 as a guide for where all the wires went back to, but no sooner had i taken off the air box on my 231, I realised the wiring is similar but there are some quite considerable differences throughout the engine.

I've searched the net relentlessly for decent pics of the wiring on a 192 engine but can't find any..so here I am begging for help lol :naughty:

I'm wondering if any one has any good pics (perhaps from a similar project) that they could share? It's the wires you can see when you've removed the air box, manifold etc. basically the wires that site over the actual engine block itself.

any help would be much appreciated

I'm new here just bought a 231ps. looking for good modifying advice currently have the typhoon installed. Looking at getting a new back box any recommendations ?

Also, the stock intake performs better than the Typhoon, suggest you change it back.

Oh okay after spending the money on the typhoon surley it cannot be that bad ? But thank you for your advice.
