Tyre question
 

Anyone got any thoughts as to which tyres will best suit the RX-8? I'm not a tyre expert, but having changed the ones on my Xedos know how much difference they can make. I have a car that now corners significantly better and handles much better in the wet, so I'm sure the same must be true for our new babies ... Mazda are not going to fit the best (and probably more expensive tyres) to their cars as standard are they now?

I'll probably replace with Potenza So3's.

I thought it was going to come with Potenzas? They changed that or am I going mad? :)

Potenza Re040's which are inferiour to the So3's.

was thinking of changing mine to pZeros...

I havnt heard anything good about PZero's anywhere.

I've had Pzeros on my Celicas (come as standard) and replaced with the same for the last 4 years - not had any problems with them - great in the dry, in the wet will drift a bit (but always put that down to the front wheel drive and driving conditions)

There are actually a whole variety of PZeros, you can't moan about them given that companies such as TVR and Ferrari fit them as standard, but I don't think they're ideal for the RX8.

I'm very much with Rob. They come with RE040s, but come time for the first change I'll be going to S03s

I'll probably go for either Toyo Proxes, Goodyear F1s or Bridgestone S03s, depending on what I can get the best deal on at the time.

I have Toyo Proxes on the TVR and the G40, and they stick like glue....

I changed my RE040s on my STi for Goodyear F1 GSD3s.

Much better in the wet.

The F1 GSD3 was EVO Mags Tyre of the year this year.

used to be a michelin man through and through.
then I got a goo deal on my continental sports on 255/45/zr18 on my seven series and absolutely no problem with them.
no problem with the bridgestone RE040 in the wet here.
Will stick with them me thinks or the S03's

Although l only have experience of an FD and not an FE the weight distribution etc is about the same so here's a few thought's and a question,

I personally now use F1's on my car this is after not only talking with different owners but experiencing different tyres on my own car , the Goodyear's came about because it was the best all-round tyre out there after reading test after test and l will say l have been very very pleased with the feel of them in all conditions .

Everyone tells me that the SO3's are not a patch on the model they replaced , l tried Avon ZZ's once and that was real scary even in the dry !

Now for my question,

Are the tyres the same compound on the European RX-8 and the Japanese RX-8's l ask this because l have known lots of FD owners change their tyres on their imported cars including buyers of new cars simply due to the rubber on their cars being to damn hard compared to the soft tyres available to us in Europe ??.

The little I've heard is that the SO3's are much better than the REO40's.

Avons have long had a reputation for being very scary although not quite as bad in the wet as BF Goodrich an ex rally driver friend of mine assures me.

Continentals are supposedly ok too (agree with Cliff)

S03s - best price is £130 - still with Andy Pearces place - my guys came up with £138.....

I would agree that the S03 isn't as good as the S02 that it replaced. I had S02s on my old MX-5 and I swear no tyre has matched the feel and grip they provided, wet or dry.

The Toyo's come close. However, I tried a set of S03s on the rear of the Tuscan after the first set of Toyo's expired.... and was duly unimpressed. Felt a lot more skittish at speed, and the breakaway at the limit was a lot sharper than the more gradual limit of the Toyos or the old S02s ...

I've a question. It's a little off topic but still tyres related.

Will anyone ever use the same model of tyre again, if you had an accident with. Were you ever doubt if it was a diff tyre, the accident you had would not have had happened.

I'm just curious, i had my accident in the S03, and I doubt I'll ever use that again.

Surely that heavily depends upon the circumstances of the accident?

If I felt that I could have avoided the accident with a better tyre then I would look for one, but were it the case that someone had crashed into me or I had simply done something stupid then to blame the tyres is hardly going to help.

Agreed that it depends on the situation. I had an accident back in my early driving days when I'd bought a second hand set of alloys for my old Golf GTI that came with a pair of remoulds.

One damp evening the back end of the car broke away on an off-camber bend and sent me sideways into the kerb and up a verge.

I wouldn't say the tyres were completely my fault, as I probably should have been travelling a bit slower than I was, but I do reckon that with a decent set of F1s or suchlike that maybe the car would have stuck to the corner a bit better....

Since then I've never had a set of remoulds... not a hard decision to make really though (and not one I'd have made anyway, if the wheels hadn't come with them already fitted).

I was invited to Bfgoodbrich tough Asphalt.Basically i drove a nissian 350 z, lexus is300, hummer H2, Volkswagon goff,and a couple otehr cars. After driving all thease cars im defintly getting the new g force kdw.Heres a link to the tires

Well i can almost gurantee that an accident i had was due to a defective tyre. Dunlop SP2000 where it just blew up. Police report said it was a defective outer wall on the tire.

I was in a ford escort 1.3 which ended up upside down in a field when i finally came to a stop.
