Spare Tyre

Anyone read the press blurb?

So far as I understand it the RX8 will not have a spare. I thought it was European law to carry at least a spacesaver?

What would you do in the middle of the night with a blow-out?

Maybe I'm being thick!

I don't think so. Mercedes has repair kits for a few years here in Germany I think.

MattFast 01-25-2003 06:31 AM

A lot of brands use special tyres which can blow thereself up so they can drive a few miles or something like that. I think Renault uses it

morganrogers 01-25-2003 09:52 AM

Well - if you are being thick then so am I.
I read somewhere about there being some 'emergency inflation kit' instead of a spare.. Guess that means some kind of gum and compressed air thingy.

Not much good with a shredded tyre is it ?

Still - Mobile phone and an RAC membership should do the trick. Phone them and bat your eyelashes. My other half seems to get away with it.... :)

Morgan.

PS - Canadians may have overtaken us but look at the quality...

There is no diversity there.
We have many short threads - they have half a dozen longer ones....

Maybe we are not as banal as first supposed....

Spare Tyre

Having started this thread, must confess to still being confused as to what you get if no tyre.

Does someone out there in any other forum, technically know what you get and how it works?

I've never had a car without spare, spacesaver yes but nothing!

Can anyone help?

Try the 'Press Release' (all 130-odd pages of it)
There must be something in there.

I will have a look tonight - I printed it into a folder at home.

Morgan.

PS - Tried to get Mazda to 'call me' from their website. I want to know if our dealers need to get in the scrum as previously discussed. I will let you know the outcome should they ever decide to phone me back!

oilman 01-27-2003 01:24 PM

Will look myself as I have it too but can't remember any details.

Well - for everyones info....

The press release has a small paragraph along the lines of "The spare tyre has been eliminated through the use of an emergency repair kit allowing for more boot space" or words to that effect.

So there you have it. No spare tyre. (!):(

Help

How am I going to get home in the middle of the night with a ripped tyre wall. Surely I'll not abandon my RX8 in the middle of nowhere to its fate.

What no way at all except a tow, can't be logical. This is not the M25 here you know.

Anyone got any further info on this? Would seem a bit mad to stick gum (or whatever) in a tyre if you've just got a small puncture that could be fixed.

Anyone know how much a spare tyre would cost and if there is a proper place for it in the car?

shahpor 05-27-2003 03:14 PM

I don't think the spare tyre is that expensive.

However, unless you are willing to sacrifice your boot space, not sure where you are gonna put it.

You could always keep it at home and get someone to bring it out to you.

GarySargent 05-27-2003 03:22 PM

I'd sooner keep a spare with me and take it out when I need the boot space! :)

The Mazda dealer I spoke to seemed to think there was a place for it to sit, but obviously with the dealers not having any RX8's he was probably guessing.

shahpor 05-27-2003 03:25 PM

Well if you want a space saver, you could probably fit it in.

I was thinking of keeping a full size spare at home incase I can't get the tyre repaired or replaced straight away.

It's an option (at least in other markets , so presume it will make it to UK)

oilman 05-28-2003 06:20 AM

I run a transport business and it's fair to say that I can get my tyres cheaper than most but I was horrified at the basic cost of an 18" runflat if that is what we are getting.

I was quoted (depending on make etc) £250 - £375 each!!

Gah.. At that cost I'll use the spray repair kit on normal tyres and buy new ones...

c170673 05-28-2003 07:42 AM

Am I correct in thinking that as part of the purchase price we get 3 years Europe-wide AA Cover?

Although I can't remember where I read this...

I don't think we are getting runflats. See thread below:

[URL=http://www.rx8forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2972]

If thats the spec for the US I don't think they would change it for the UK unless there is some legal issue. Not only are runflats expensive but they also give poor ride quality due to the stiffer sidewalls.

RE040's come in standard and runflat (suffix RFT). I think the standard ones cost about £150 each in 225/45 x 18 size.

By the way, does anyone know what the tyre wear rates are on rear wheel drive cars? In my front wheel drive car I am used to getting less than 10000 miles out of my front tyres but the rear ones last for ages, 25K+). Is this reversed for rear wheel drive, or is the wear more evenly spread between front and rear?

oilman 05-28-2003 08:09 AM

Yes, I believe this is correct as I read it too!!

Rear wheel drive cars have a much more balanced tyre wear compared to front wheel drive. My current front wheel drive gives me about 10k from the fronts and 40k from the backs!!

morganrogers 05-28-2003 10:13 AM

Oddly - (not that anyone cares , but hey - it's trivia) I get ~20K from the integraR on both front and rear !

First set of tyres I was amazed. Comes down to my high motorway diet and well sorted chassis I suppose...
Sometimes I am down to 15K on the fronts , but that will include a track day !

It's becoming increasingly common for spare tyre's to be left out of cars in place of a couple of cans of "Tyre Weld" or suchlike. I know that TVR don't supply spares in their new cars. Also, cars like the Elise, S2000 etc...

Unfortunately, from what I've heard, the use of such products renders the tyre irrepairable, so a new one is required.

I just had to buy new tyres for the TVR, and managed to get Toyo Proxes in 225/40-18s for 125quid each. Better tyre than the RE040 as well, so not too bad. Obviously not a run-flat tho.
