Is it really 12K miles to the 1st oil change?

Just confirmed this with my dealer, I expected an oil change at approx 1000 miles, to remove the contaminated running in oil. If the 1st service/oil change is that far away I may get it changed earlier to be on the safe side.

p.s. I'm sure I've read that the US cars have their oil changed after 1000 km!:(

Its a 1000 miles in the US - they don't know what a km is, outside the military.

Some countries have service intervals half of ours, which might be necessary in certain climates. But the difference between 1000 and 12000 for the first oil change is a huge discrepancy.

it seems too large to me - i'll have a look at the change your own oil thread and see about doing it myself after 3000-4000miles

Although a few people in the forum from the US have discussed changing their oil sooner , neither the Mazda manual for the US or dealers are stating that it needs to be changed after the first 1000 miles.

The recommended maintanence in the manual for an oil change in the US is every 7500 miles for routine usage and every 5000 for more severe usage. 7500 miles is about 12,000 km.

And also don't forget the TIME OR mileage/(kilometer-age?) limits if you are worrying about how LONG between oil changes. I just had my first scheduled maintenance @4 months and 2800 miles (2800 miles = 4,506.1632 kilometers).

And Druck, never been in the military, but do give us yanks the benefit of the doubt about knowing what a kilometer is, and, at least those who are calculator trained in school, how to convert to them.

Due to the buyback thing, all was on MNAO. Next one is scheduled for Feb/04, and I doubt I'll have much more distance on it as winter is coming and I have 2 other cars to slide around in. Still plan on having it done then, after all, why not? :)
