Power Output

Power figures for UK RX-8
While the web site does say that power is 231ps the Kilowatt power remains the same at 177KW which translates into 241PS !!!!!!
Now some fool has either just not bothered to adjust the KW figure or we are as you are at 241ps ( as reported by many a person) and that same fool has put in 231 instead of 241 !!!
Either way has anyone actually been told by a SENIOR Mazda employee that the power is only 231ps, my dealer simply shrugged his shoulders and said " they keep changing things without telling us".
Lets hope it is the ps figure which is wrong!!!

Unfortunately, it will be an error that the 177kw hasnt been changed.

The power has been changed to 231ps and I have had confirmation from a senior employee that this is to meet current and future EU regs and improve fuel economy.

There are a number of other threads already on this subject.

Do you know if the current official fuel consumption figures are for the reduced power or can we expect to see an improvement?

If you read the update I posted yesterday on this thread https://www.rx8club.com/europe-forum-36/good-news-feedback-mazda-5071/ you will see that Mazda said they will be releasing fuel figures this week on the website.

Therefore it would be safe to assume that the current figures in the book refer to the 240ps model and we should expect to see a minor improvement.

Yes I read that, but I wasn't clear whether you meant they will be releasing new figures onto the website (and any old figures are now out of date) or just that they were adding fuel consumption specs to the website, which doesn't contain them at present.

The current figures we have don't come from The Book and are quite recent, so I would not be surprised if they are actually the "improved" figures.

Apologies, I wasnt sure which figures you were referring to. If you meant the ones in Oilmans technical info thread then they may well be the new ones. However, these havent been officially released yet so any official ones will be the old ones.

Frustratingly, with the power decrease the "Low Power" car is looking better value, if you forgo the Xenons and 6 speed, than the Medium, sorry, "Hi Power" car. I think this one issue will lead to order cancellations.

I went for the low power as well on antipaction of lower insurance
and slightly better economy.
Apparently the xenon headlights might bump the hi power up a group.

RobDickinson 06-04-2003 03:40 AM

Doesnt the high power have other uprated parts too? I'm sure the US version has better suspension ect.

mhopley 06-04-2003 04:33 AM

I pressumed that the extra £2k got you
39ps extra power
xenon headlights
6 speed box

I did notice that the hi power engine has a higher red line ( and worse economy)

Does anyone know any other differences?

Giggsy 06-04-2003 05:06 AM

Alloy pedal set, thats it!

Plus the headlight washer system.

Gigsy, Where did you find the info about the alloy pedal set?

I did not know that the headlight washers were not included, but I know it is a requirement for the xenons so it makes sense.

Giggsy 06-04-2003 05:37 AM

Alloy Peadal? Thought that was well known, info was given to mevery early on from dealer. There is a possibility that only the high power will come with the rotary accent kits aswell.

mhopley 06-04-2003 05:53 AM

It did seem odd that the only way you would be able to tell the high power version was the different headlights, so it would make sense if the rotary accent kit is included.
I wish I knew before hand - it might of convinced me to spend the extra £2k.

RobDickinson 06-04-2003 05:55 AM

Hope the hi-power comes with the alloy pedals, can do without the accent package (well might like the strakes :))

Is about $300 for dealer fited pedals I htink ...

It would spoil MY day because I don't want it!
