!!!!! Nordic Green 8 Stolen !!!!!

My '04 Nordic Green RX8 Grand Touring with Nav has been stolen. It is an american 8 that I had shipped to Hungary in January 2006 when I moved back to my home country from the US. It has the black/chapparal interior and rear wing + a Sirius Radio that works only in the States. The VIN ends in 6414. The thief broke into our house in Gardony, Hungary on October 10 at night while we were sleeping, found the key and drove off. The original licence plate was a Minnesota plate LV-977 that was stolen off the car while being shipped across the Atlantic ocean. The current plate was also Minnesotan: RKW-850.

If any of you spots this car or receive parts that you think might belong to this car, please email me at eriks@logicpd.com or call or SMS my cell phone at +36 20 313 4177. I speak English and Hungarian.

Thanks,
Erik

With the nav system on your car is there no way they can track that somehow? I mean its a GPS right? And they have to be able to locate it with the satellite, so there has to be some way...

Unfortunately, that is not the case. The GPS receiver in my car is a receiver only. It knows what its position is for navigation purposes but has no way to transmit this position information. The satellites do not "listen" they just keep sending what they think the current time is. They are all synchronized very accurately so if they were in close proximity, side by side you would not be able to tell them apart based on the time information they are sending. However, when they are at a distance from you, the time info will have to travel the distance between the satellite and you, the receiver, which takes time. Based on the delay, you will be able to calculate the satellite's distance from you. Now if you did this for three or more satellites, then you would be able to compute your own position without ever talking to any of the satellites.
The satellite tracking systems use the same exact methodology but adding a cell phone. The cell phone continuously sends the position information determined by the GPS receiver. This is how police know where the car is. My car did not have this cell phone extension.

Thanks, for thinking about how to retrieve the car, though.

Erik
