In Ireland the RX-8 is taxed as a 1701cc engine. see link for rates,

the RX-8 is in the over 225 grams per kilometre, i.e. €2000 per annum for all RX-8's registered in Ireland after 1st July '08.

Tax and the Rx8
Cars that are registered abroad prior to Jan 2008 will still be taxed on the old engine size scale so you can still import any Rx8 up to a 2008 without having to pay 2k tax. It says that on the link O'Renesis posted as well, look in the section with the heading 'Cars Registered Outside of Ireland'. You'll pay much higher VRT but at least you won't have to pay higher tax. With the prices of Rx8's on the Irish market at the moment you're better off picking one up here anyway.

Paul, how come you're paying €750 for tax and the rest of us are paying €530?? Are you calulating your €150 for 3 months at a time and coming up with it? A one off payment of €530 is better

Yep, thats pretty much it!! I've only ever taxed if for 3 months, no point taxing it for a year when I can't keep it. THe next one I get I'll be taxing for a year and no way I'll be letting that one go before I'm good and ready. Hopefully I'll be in a position to buy one again before summer 2010.

One very important piece of advice for you.... check the use-by date on the drum of solution that comes with the tyre repair kit in the boot of the car. If its out of date and you're buying from a dealer get them to replace it for you. If you're buying it private give them the option of getting you a new one for the same purchase price or else get at least a couple of hundred euro off as to buy a full new kit from Mazda is something like 400 euro. Price it at your local Mazda dealer beforehand. You can get them a lot cheaper on ebay though.
One last piece of advice I'd give you..... get yourself to Halfords and get a few litres of 5w30 part synthetic oil, a set of jump leads and a tow rope and lob all 3 of them into the boot. Hopefully you'll never need the jump leads or the tow rope but the one time you get flooded in the middle of nowhere you'll be very glad of them!

No problem goose, good luck with it! I hope you took our advice and bumped up to the 231PS but even if you didn't I'm sure the 192PS will be enough to get you hooked and next time you'll get urself its big brother!

No problem goose! Just one thing about the flooding. If it does happen to flood, there might not be a need for jump leads or getting it towed. What I did when it happened me is just let the car sit for a while then try it again. Or you can just give it a push for less than a metre and it will start no problem.

Have any of you guys dyno'd your RX-8? I am curious as to what the actual horspower etc might be for a bog standard model. It appears that the horspower numbers on the American cars vary a lot. Also where in Ireland can you get the car dyno'd?

Being Ireland and all, there aren't many of them around but I managed to find a few. I haven't gotten a chance to dyno mine yet but there was a test done when it was in Japan and it was hitting 247BHP. Hope this helps!

I checked an post's website and inserted the tracking number for the AP. It was in Portlaoise last night so I should have it today. There's a lot of different tuning and calibrating to be done before it can be (as MazdaManiac said) "Tuned to the skin of its teeth". It works better 10 fold if you have a TC or SC but I don't because as you know, there aren't many mechanics who would normally fit them who can work on the 8. They are also too expensive imho.

Lads does anyone know of anyone lookin for a ridiculous deal on a fantastic Rx-8 for an excruciatingly painful price of 15k??? I've just advertised mine for 16800 on autotrader (its the Red 231PS in Tipperary) cos I need the cash for a deposit on a house but I wasn't in any real rush to sell but now someone else has put an offer on the same house so it needs to go quick.... if anyone has any interest give me a shout on 0860423232, trust me its the real deal, check it out on Autotrader.
Honest to god selling this is like donating a kidney

Hi everyone again… I think I have f....ed my rx8 up. Driving it very hard today and I was at about 7000rpm 4th gear and a very strange noise came from the engine and I lost power for about a second. I then took it handy then just to get me to work. At lunch I drove it and it was fine, But on the way back from lunch it lost power again and then the engine light flashed 3 times, I said oh bollox... out really load and **** a myself.
I was then trying to get it to my partner’s mum house in swords. But the f n thing would not start when I got back in to it, mad noise, engine not firing up at all, needles flying all over the place on the dash, tc light also flashing like mad, I got my old man to come out and tow me to swords, the ******* thing started on a tow and drove fine to swords?????. I just tried to start it again at 20:00 and its running **** and back firing... Can’t bring it to the garage tomorrow as everywhere is closed for paddy’s... Going ******* mad and I hope it’s noting to bad.. Anyone have any ideas????

Well if I had to guess I would have thought that it might be spark plugs/ignition coils or something along those lines, maybe? Or CAT blocked maybe?
But then again it could be any one of a thousand different things, so what was the actual problem?

yep you are right O'Renesis. it was the coils, 2 of them failed, i had to replace all 4, and spark plugs,also done a full service, running like a dream again... Lets hope it stays this way... thanks D
