Me 2.
Yes, the "greens" have really Fxxxd up any chance of the ordinary joe soap from owning any performance car. Great news for the well heeled "greens" etc
I think i will emigrate to better motoring pastures

BBoy, I started a new thread regarding the R3 but I have a feeling no one will go near it since we already have this subject here haha

I think Mazda should do something to entice the purchase of the R3. I know they dropped the price of the 192bhp model by €7000 but they did nothing with the 230bhp model.

They have a hydrogen renesis built and working but no mass production done with it whatsoever. That would be perfect. If they put that into the new one and charged the original price (c. €45,000) just for the Irish market that would be good.

I doubt we'll see ANY of the R3 here. If you can afford that kind of tax then you won't be buying it second hand so no one will buy it because they won't be able to get rid of it!

Yeah, it just doesnt make economic sense to buy the R3 here in Ireland....once again the government is screwing themselves over and aiding to the downfall of our economy!

However, aside from the obvious interior design and gadget improvements, the old (cant believe i said "old" already) RX8 looks better on the outside IMO.

On a positive note, I'm pretty sure the last series of RX8's will go up in value!

Question, does the new tax regime apply to when you actually buy the car or when the car was originally registered? Meaning, if I buy a 10 year old car, will i be paying the new or old tax scheme?

Cheers,
Akay

The new tax regime applies to all cars (new and used) imported/registered from the 1st July '08 but not to any car registered before the 1st July '08.
This should mean that our cars have a better resale value than the new or imported cars registered after 1st July.

O'Renesis is right.

If you import a car from anywhere in the world, register it and put it on Irish plates it's going to be taxed on the new system. If it was on Irish plates before the 1st of July, it's the old system.

The BMW 320d is probably the best car to own on the new system. On the old system it cost around €730 to tax, now it's €150. That's a fairly torquey car for that price! Come on Mazda! Make a diesel Renesis!!! Follow in Audi's R8 footsteps! Just through an X and a - in between it!

Just to clarify why Ireland isn't getting the R3, I emailed Mazda Ireland. This is the reply I got:

__________________________________________________ _______________

Dear David,

Thank you for your comment.

It is unfortunate that we are not in a position to maintain this vehicle on the Irish Market as there is a minimum volume requirement from the Factory for all vehicles. The RX8 suffered an increase of almost €8,000 and incurs an annual road tax fee €2,080 following the CO2 Changes to VRT and Road Tax in July 2008. These changes coupled with the current “prudent “ purchasing patterns render this segment in Ireland very marginal indeed.

However, if you are very keen on purchasing this vehicle and we can contact our European Head Office on your behalf?

Kind Regards

Áine Phillips

Another RX-8 owner checking in

Hi all,
Well, I'm not irish but have been living in Dublin for the past 6 years. Got myself a nice '04 RX-8 last year (highly influenced by TopGear I guess), and l'm loving it. I have the 231hp red velocity with red and black leather. Imported it from the UK and looked for one with all the toys and low mileage (currently 30kmiles).

I'm not surprised that Mazda has stopped selling the RX-8, it used to be an affordable sport car (VRTed and TAXed as 1.8), but thanks to the governement it's not anymore. People happy to pay for 2k€ of road tax a year would probably choose Porche instead!

Anyway, any meetup scheduled?
Btw, what's you favorite Mazda Dealer (if any!!) in Dublin? Avoid Phoenix Motor at any cost (they have no clue about RX-8) and avoid also Belgard Road (overpriced).
Another tip : Get your plugs and ignition coils yourself (Uk website) and bring them to the dealer (4 times cheaper).

All right lads,We never organised the meet up any were, this is someting we should defo do, it would be a bit a crack a loads of 8's flying down some motor way some were.
Anyway i am just back from the top gear show, And it was wort the money, I SO want a f n Ferrari, But will never have the money........ SO the rx will have to do.
I just fit on friday a remote start system and alarm to my car , I got it at the boys toys and the 2 lads came to me on friday and installed it, Works deadly and didnt cost to much either, 200 for the device and then 200 for the install, The only thing is you have to use your spare key, They have to take the imobiliser from it to add to the alarm,
So no more waiting in the morning for the car to heat up, i will just be able to get in and put the foot down,, Which is badly need as i am always late for work.
I have one question, i was just looking at the weels on the 8 above, can you get the stock weels sand blasted and polished or do you have to just replace them?

Koksik,

Stock wheels for sale? I BADLY need a set if the price is right The previous owner of my 8 did a fair amount of kerb damage to them

I'm looking for the normal ones, not chrome...please help me!

As for a meet, Abbeyleix seems like a good place I suppose! How about sometime in the new year? Probably a Saturday or Sunday??
