If RX-8's make money......

will any of you be selling them in six months time and ordering a new one with full spec ie Sat Nav,MP3 and loads of accessories?

Let's face it, any car which has a waiting list seems to sell higher than list initially Mini Cooper,Z4,MGF etc...

Just a thought!

RobDickinson 09-24-2003 04:15 AM

Sell it and drive what exactly in the mean time?

if I dont like it, cant get on with it for any reason, then I'll sell and try find something esle I like.

There are possible problems I see that will cause me to sell.

Oddly enough - my biggest worry - the air con re foot/floor venting. In cold conditions I always ahve hot air blowing directly onto feet, as I find upper blowers to cause stuffyness. if the Air con is ALWAYs on with just feed blowers (why?) then it may be cause to sell.

Room, I'll need space for at least a weeks worth of holidaying - or long weekend for 4 people, will find this out quick

MPG. I know it wont be good, if its realy realy poor, may have to sell - especialy if its v12 poor, might as well get a v12.

My dealer has already suggested that to me - would you believe! The argument is that the residuals will be very strong in the first tweleve months (at least) that if 6 months into getting my first car I order a new one for delivery in a further 6 months then they will be able to part exchange the "old" RX8 for a new one at very little cost. Will have to wait and see of course - seems like jumping the gun since I dont even one the first one yet :(

Don't be so impractical!

Put it up for sale for £3000 more then order a new one scheduled for March. Come end of Feb sell it and then collect the new one. There may be a couple of days without a car but it could be done seamlessly.

I am going to do this if the residuals are high!

Interesting thought :)

It really depends upon supply of the cars, as if there are unsold cars sitting on forecourts in 3 months time like the US then this wont happen.

I wish Id ordered the Nav now, so maybe I would consider re-ordering with Nav if it didnt cost more than the price of the system to change.

I didn't order Nav either as it seemed well over priced when I ordered the car. It would appear that most members have ordered it and like you I wish I had now as it may effect the cars resale :(

First time poster and this probably should be a new thread but:

RX-Late: not sure it will affect resale having built in sat-nav.

I've never used one but I have seen add-ons for palm pilot type personal orgainsers. They dont cost anywhere near as much as factory fitted sat navs.

Not sure of all the features they offer but I'd assume by the time u came to sell your car a mobile sat nav would have more features, be faster, etc...

That's my reason for not getting a factory one anyway. Plus you can take a mobile one anywhere.

Welcome to the forums Paul.:)

I agree - Sat Nav does not tend to affect the residuals, I'd be surprised if you saw more than £200 difference in a years time between a hi-power with and without sat nav with the same mileage.

RX8BoiUK 09-24-2003 11:21 AM

Ta Andy,

toys seem to lose a lot of their value at resale.
A more loaded car will sell quicker (everything else being equal) but the prices will be about the same.

2nd hand 8's will go like hot cakes for a good few years.

If I have trouble selling mine (come the time) I'm sure I'll have amassed enough free road atlases (thro buying oil) to afford to throw one in on the deal

:D

I agree with you Paul on the handheld nav software available.

A friend has Tom Tom running on his IPAQ, with a GPS receiver (which was £80) and it is impressive.
The only downside I could see are having to disconnect it each time you leave the car and a bit more annoying, the fact that it is difficult to hear the voice instructions from the tiny IPAQ speaker. (there is a solution for that though, where you can buy a transmitter which plugs into the earphone socket and then transmits to the car radio on a free FM frequency).

Having said all of that, I have an IPAQ and still decided to go for the sat nav. :)

The RX8 I saw had one and I'm a sucker for gadgets, so I had to have it. :D
Besides, the RX8 is such excellent value I dont feel that I'm pushing the boat out that much!

MarkW, there is an article in this weeks Autocar (sorry) stating the "Joys of Spec". It features an 8 with Sat nav stating that residuals will be better with it than without it. Or are they trying to say that without it, you've got no chance in selling this duffer. Knowing how Autocar love this car sooooooo much, its probably the later.

IMHO, the cars value (just like the majority of new cars) will drop as soon as you twist the key, and drive off from the showroom.

Incidentally, is anyone having the car delivered to them on a damaging flat bed trailer or doing the customary pickup from the showroom?

AnilS.

AnilS,

Yes I read that in Autocar. They said that the residuals on an RX8 would be better with Nav than without. Also they said dont get the two tone leather.

I beleive this to be bollox ;) as unless a car with Nav is worth £1500 more at resale (which I doubt), then how can the Nav make residuals better?

And the leather is a subjective thing, some like it some dont so dont see how this will affect residuals either.

Cheers
Mark

Thanks all for the comments regarding sat nav. I've checked with my dealer and they don't think it will make any more than £500 difference after 1 year. This means that as usual "toys" and accessories depreciate faster than the car itself in general.

mr_digital_uk 09-24-2003 02:21 PM

I bought the sat nav cos I get lost a lot :)

I've got the PDA stuff and it's been great, but the built in unit is so much better for day-to-day use.

As I've said before on this forum ... the handheld devices are great for when you are at some large event such as a Robbie Williams concert or Farnborough Airshow ... there you can use them to mark the spot of your beloved 8 and get back to it without trying to remember where in the 20 acres of car park u left it.

RobDickinson 09-24-2003 02:40 PM

rarely have need for sat nav, and 2nd hand its only sought after cause you get it cheap compared to new, never make back the £1.5k you pay 1st time round

RX8BoiUK 09-24-2003 02:51 PM

Not sure residuals will be affected by any of the limited options available.

You could equally argue that having two tone leather makes the car easier to sell.

Hopefully I'm not gonna have to worry about resale value for a few years, assuming i like what i see when i finally get to see an 8
