Idle speed?

What are other owners finding the idle speed is?

It seems to be about 800rpm for me, however dropping below 1000rpm gives quite a vibration through the gear lever, which makes me suspect it might be a touch too low. You cant fell any vibrartion through the body of the car, but it is noticeable when you have your hand on the stick at lights - my only niggle with the car so far.

Cheers

Interesting, mine never seems to idle below 1000, however long it has been running. On cold start it 'idles' at 2,500 ... seems very high, and while it does it I can hear a wooshing noise as fuel is sucked out of the tank and into the chambers.

1000 on the dot

apart from cold, although its garaged at night, it gets to around 2000....

Mine is garaged too but somewhat further north than you Simon.
In fact it is almost the North Pole.......sometimes!!

At start up it hit 2200rpm today then after a minute was down to 1400, then by the time I pulled away it was a tad over 1000rpm.
Seems to purr at 1000rpm once warm.

renegade_si 11-11-2003 05:45 PM

...bet its cleaner than mine too cliff!!!!

RobDickinson 11-12-2003 02:34 AM

Mine Idles at 800ish when warm. slightly rough idle.

yeh only done 304 miles in it so far and 44 were by the dealer transporting it from Dundee to Kirkcaldy.........

so you can say it is a bit cleaner than your Severn Bridge flying machine..........

So does anyone know the factory spec for idle? Mine seems to dip around 750 - 800RPM. If it's supposed to be a tad over 1000, I'll have the dealer adjust it tomorrow when I bring my car in. Anyone?

druck 12-11-2003 06:18 PM

The consenus is that about 800rpm when warm is what its supposed to be.

You get a bit of virbration through the stick, so I now tend to rest my hand on the handbrake at lights instead.

800 for me too with vibration through the stick which I knew about but still found surprising considering how smooth the engine is supposed to be.

800 for me too. I noticed a really neat thing this morning. In 5th gear in a 190 if the rev counter stick is at exactly 90 degrees, I'm doing 78 mph, a nice visual aid to travelling at just below the bookable speed.

Also, has anyone else noticed the two little blobs of water you get travelling up the V in the bonnet when it rains. I tried to get them to spill over the top of the bonnet but couldn't... I know it's sad but hey it's the little things that are fun.

jimbobjoe 12-12-2003 05:45 AM

800 for me too.
The vibration is noticeable only because there is so little at any other rev. Not bothered though.

Kenco 12-12-2003 05:40 PM

800rpm idle, runs a bit rough at 2000ish after startup, then seems to clear its throat within a few seconds and lowers.
Only 100 miles to go til redline city!:D

Mine's about 750-800, although it drops to 1000 first, then down to 800 or so if you leave it for 30 seconds or so...

As for the little blobs of water, I feel at home already, my Landrover Defender does that too... except you can build up a huge amount of water there and when you brake, it spills off, into the airstream and then hits the windscreen all in one go.

mr_digital_uk 12-14-2003 02:47 AM

2000 rpm when cold
1100 shortly after
850 when warm

kevinD1226 05-13-2007 02:52 PM

yea i have the same issue the vibration is more than just the shifter thou mine iddles at about 800ish almost feels like the exhaust is loose and shaking my other guess maybe motor mounts?? i bought my 04 used with about 35k on it so i still have factory warrenty so if this is an issue ill have them fix it

Speedsteve 05-14-2007 09:09 AM

idle

Could be good to clean your MAF sensor. Mine did the excact same thing and after cleaning the MAF sensor, all was ok again.

idle should be in the neighborhood of 850 rpm when warmed up.

If you're seeing vibrations, it tends to be the motor mounts.

Mazdaspeed 88 05-17-2007 01:50 AM

Mine is 800rpm too. ;-)

mazsportmantis 11-13-2007 10:08 AM

I have had my RX8 for about 3 years now and would say that if you are under 750RMP at idle or your needle bounces below that you may need to check a few things.

Spark plugs
Coil Packs

If you have a rough vibration when the recirculating fan and AC are on in your center dash, then it could also be your motor mounts.

I found that around 20,000 miles my motor mounts were bad, all coil packs were burnt, and my spark plugs needed replacing.

My 8 felt so much better after that change.

Mazsport sells all OEM product as well as designs or has recommendations for these above products with regards to improving performance.

EdwardsB 11-19-2007 09:38 AM

Mine idles right around 850 (like previously stated from others) after the engine is fully warmed up, and there is a vibration in the stick and you can notice the airbag slightly shakes. Sometimes you can feel a slight shaking but then it goes away (almost in a cyclic cycle). If I just barley give it gas and bring my rpm's up to about 875-925 hard to be exact, you can barley even tell the engine is on, it’s that smooth, no vibrations even thru the stick. Could this be wires, coils, spark, or mounts needing replacing. I understand it’s hard to diagnose without seeing it in person, but any ideas from seasoned RX owners. Also this is all being done with the car in neutral and my foot is off the clutch. While daily/sport driving the car is not sluggish and does not feel like it is down on power. Got my first rotary this summer and love ever second of it.

Thanks

mazsportmantis 11-19-2007 10:23 AM

start cheap....co spark plugs, then the coils etc. I find that watching the idle and is a good way to know when your 8 needs a bit o attention.

EdwardsB 11-19-2007 11:01 AM

Alright thanks for the advice ill give it a try. Come to think of it, it’s probably time for new plugs anyway…appreciate it mazsportmantis
