How Far have we come?
Looking at motor history, and specificaly cars that can compare to the RX-8.
Most obvious one which comes to mind was the origonal Sierra cosworth. First launched in 1986, 204bhp @ 6k. 6.5 sec to 60 and top speed of 149. Seats 5 with decent luggage room. 22mpg urban lol. Its heavy at 1700kg(gross) but kerbweight is only 1200kg. Ok, the cosworth was arguably way ahead of its time and a step up in performance to most other stuff on the roads. Handling, ride, refinement, safety and options the RX-8 will be well ahead, and lets face it 200-250bhp isnt far ahead of the 'average' car curve at the moment. Price wise I thing an equivelant cosworth would be what , £30k now, with 300bhp+AWD , something similar to the Evo FQ300. Strange to see how far we've come in almost 20 years, or not. Was looking at a lambo urraco for mid £20k's very similar performance to the RX-8 from a 70's supercar. Wonder what cars will be lik ein 20 years time, if were all still driving ourselves, and using petrol. |
