Do we need to run the engine in?
 

I was hoping that you fellow members could shed some light on if we have to run the engine in for 1000 miles before we can experiance the power of the 8?. I understand that it is not a good idea to go crazy with a new engine. Any feedback would be appricated.

I'd also liked to know this as its a completely different engine to the norm. I've heard it uses more oil than normal engines too, so presumably we'd need to keep a closer look on it whilst been run-in.
The last few cars I've bought, the dealer has recommended no more than 4500 revs for the first thousand but thats with a 6500 redline so maybe its to keep it under 6500-7000 for the 8.

Again, the rotary engines burn oil. This is normal, and happens throughout their whole life. If they dont burn oil, THEN you have a problem. Check oil frequently, and at least every 500km (during the first 1500km), and then every 1000km. Keep a bottle of oil in the trunk, and be weary of any "Low Oil" or "Low Coolant" warning lights in the dash ;)

As for break-in, there are just 3 moving parts in the rotary, and they dont need to "sit in" their "proper" positions. Theoretically you can go all out from the very start, but I wouldnt recommend anything above 5K during the first 500km or so.......just as a safety precaution.....

What WE have to check our own oil and keep spare oil in the car?
Why can't it be like the good old days where you pull into a petrol station and they fill you up, check your levels and clean your screen. Lazy buggers.:D

Never Rev to the RedLine til the car has warm up, wheather if the car has been run-in or not. Applies to all engine, piston or rotary.

I am perceiving this as a joke, because if you dont understand why you should check the vital fluids of you OWN car every now and then, I dont think you should be allowed to own a RX8 in the first place......:p

As for the remark from M-ster, rotaries shouldnt be revved hard AT ALL during their warmup phase, i.e at least until oil pressure is nominal, and coolant/oil temperature is at operating levels ;)

anyway i took a test drive the other day, which went extremely well and i'm smiles again, maybe the 135mph had something to do with it... and redlining in almost every gear :D
(sales assisant next to me didn't mind... hehehe)

anyway back to the oil question.... is it correct that the oil recommended is 5W20???
i ask this because i poped the trunk open yesterday, after the test drive and the oil supplied with the car was 5W30, so i'm kinda confused.

oh yes the test drive car i drove was the titanium silver one. did any of you, who have driven it, experienced a pull to the left whilst braking?? Because i could feel this while i was braking to enter the garage.

Not sure about the oil type, this has been discussed previously but there was some confusion over the oil which was going to be recommended for euorpean cars. I think it may be different to that recommended in the USA. Interestingly my test drive car a Titanium one (you can have silver or titanium) had a bottle of oil in the boot strapped in on the left hand side. Might have been the same car! I reported this and no other members replied that their test car had a bottle of oil included!

Was it a BMW 3 series that you drove :D as I've been pulled up on this one before.
The RX8 is Titanium Grey and the BMW's are Titanium Silver.
As to the pulling, sorry I didn't feel any pull when braking.

So, is it titanium or silver??:D

anyway was a nice colour but could have done with a wash as it was getting a bit dull.

Any more info on the oil?? RX-Late, the oil that i saw was also strapped in the boot but was on the driver side. it was an official mazda branded 5W30 oil.

There are other threads on this suggesting that you do for the 1st 1000K or so. I am not so sure as modern engines are all now bench tested and run in and the rotary as such few moving parts compared to a piston engine.

I am not sure I will have the patience.

We've sacrificed SERVICE for CHEAP PETROL (supermarkets etc have ripped the market to pieces).

There have been around 2000 independant froecourts closed in the last 2 years. With them went SERVICE.

Unfortunately, it's what the consumer wants!

screw service, my local independant treated everyone like criminals and forced people to pay for fuel before filling up(which I hate, dont know how much its gona cost).

Tesco has card payment at the pump, much quicker, and safer, which is why the local closed.

I do understand. It's not just your industry thats suffered from the British public wanting cheap, cheap, cheap all the time which is a shame. For this reason I think thats why we have lost a lot of our industry.
Some people come in to our shop and gasp at the prices and say that we are really expensive, but what they don't realise is that we are not expensive for the product, they are not used to spending that sort of money on high end goods.
Where as if you go to Germany there are a lot of shops like ours and people there are used to spending money on the better things. Thats why Germany still have a good industry.

With regards to the service you used to get in petrol stations, I'm not that old to remember but I have watched some older films.:D
