Child-proof locks
 

I know this sounds crazy, and I'll have to teach my kids not to do it, but when I do the school run, both my kids will sit on the passenger side, rather than one behind me. As the oldest is only six, theres nothing stopping him, when sat at the front from opening his door! Just an observation.

erm, I THINK that you can lock the doors with a button near the electric windows on the drivers side (racks brain)....

You can't, I just tried. The lock is only for the power windows, no safety locks the kid can jump out now ;)

Darn! Thanks for that. Then again, how many cars CAN you do that with? I presume that there is still something other than just the handle that the kid has to move to open the door though?

Also, anyone TRIED opening the door when travelling ? :D

That's a shame - my last Toyota and the current two all have a button mounted by the driver for locking/unlocking the doors. (Celica, MR-2, and Corolla Verso). I thought it was almost standard to have this feature nowadays.

Evil, you're right. My wifes Yaris can lock all doors at the push of a button, but if you engage the central locking on my Focus, as soon as you pull on the passenger (internal) door handle, it disengages and unlocks all four doors.

I hope the Mazda is like the Toyota in this respect.

Maybe there is a feature within the Alarm that allows you to do this.

On the Sigma alarm on my Impreza you can program it to activate the central locking as soon as you turn the key in the ignition.

Ive always had this activated as it is a safety feature that stops people jumping in the passenger seat and carjacking you!

I thought pulling on the internal door handle of the front doors always unlocks and opens the doors on all cars unless the deadlocks have been engaged.

I believe it's a required safty feature in the event of an accident.

Sorry if I confused, you can lock /unlock "All" the doors (remember there is ONLY 2) from the driver side.

But you can still unlock the passenger side there is no block for it.

There is both the electric locking and slam lock. So you could manually unlock the door even if there was an electronic lock out.

I don't see the big deal here - I've never seen a car with childproof locks or any sort of "lock your passenger in the car" locks on the front doors. The RX-8 inherently already has them on the rear doors because you can't open them without first opening the fronts.

Eccles, my point is that my young kids will be in the car and one will certainly be in the front seat. Ever tried stopped a child sat in the front, not to mess about ? In my current car, both kids sit in the rear, and exit out onto the pavement (non road side). In the 8, I'm not having one child clamber over the central transmission tunnel.

Also, isn't there a separate lock on the door (ie not just the handle that kids can pull) that is harder to do?

Oh, I understand your point. But regardless of who's sitting there, it's still a front door, and I don't believe any cars have childproof locks on the front doors. I just think your expectation is unfounded, is all. :)
