Accessories - fitting your own?
Anyone got any comments about obtaining accessories mail order (from overseas) and fitting oneself, in order to keep costs down?
|
I'm interested...
|
I looked at getting the strakes (air vent thingeys) from a US mazda parts supplier.
But after delivery and customs it would have been to close to the UK costs. |
At the moment parts from the states are only slightly cheaper than the UK. Due to shipping and customs (what's the rule for this by the way?). But, I was hoping accessories in Greece for example would be much cheaper. Would we have to pay any customs then?
|
Would be interested if it was much cheaper.
I think we need to wait until there are independants over here who start producing stuff at a more realistic price. |
There will be, I'm sure, a number of places who will do 3rd party versions of these things.
I'm not going to pay for any extras and wait to do the add ons. Well apart from Window Tinting, which isn't a Mazda option anyway. Strafes would be nice, too expensive Vent Rings would be nice (apparently standard on leather now!) but £54 (!). The MX5 ones I got cost £18! places that I hope will do accessories www.mx5parts.co.uk (scimiter international) Moss |

What i would like to see are another set of prices for supply only, without the added 'labour cost' of the installation. Perhaps the dealers will be able to come to some kind of local agreement with us, but it would be easier for everyone if it was an agreed discount.
There are already 'how to's' appearing on the forum. I'd fit most things myself, if it was worth my while, but i'm not going to go to the ends of the earth to save a tenner of the fitted cost here, then have to fit it myself. Not everyone will want to fit their own accessories, but i'd rather get more of them, than pay for mazda to fit them. Good news about the leather/vent ring deal, that's a nice surprise! |

not to "butt in" on your forum.........however it appears that all the US vehilcles have the trim rings around the vents, but they all are plastic. The reason they are sold as an option is if you choose to "upgrade" the plastic ones that all the cars have.....to the aluminum ones sold as an option.
I have no leather (Sport package) and I have never seen a car without the trimrings, no matter what package people get. My advise is to wait until you have the cars to decide on buying them. I dont think anyone but yourself will know that you changed out the plastic rings to aluminum ones..... :) |

Greece ? CHEAPER ? Thanks, I needed the laughter.....:D
|
Yes. All the cars have the trim ring as pictured below (US spec). I would assume you guys will get the same. They are plastic. the aluminum "upgrade" looks the same...maybe a tiny bit thicker.
.....and yes I do think that option is silly when you wont make any visble difference, but I guess there is some aluminum fanatics out there. Hope this helps......and saves you some money;) |
Thanks Gyro - saved me 55 quid. Cheers!

Guys,
My start-button is in the post from Japan and should be here (before the car! :( ) in a few days... Will post up pics and instructions when it arrives... -andy- |
price and details please sixspeed!
I want the gear knob from that new Jag, with the flip-top and 'fire' button beneath! where are you going to put it? |
|
Guys I used to live in Japan and still have mates out there. It may be possible for me to arrange either a) A trip out there myself to pick up parts for the car or b) to get mates to send them back.
Do we know if they sell the strakes and starter button cheaper out there? I thought that accessory prices for UK have noy tey been confirmed. |

Cheers Rob been reading them for half an hour and agree with the majoruty that they are lostly overpriced.
I may go for the Strakes and Air Dam but other than that they can get lost. I may have to compare the pricing with JDM prices. |

It comes with wiring harness and instructions to fit down between the steering column and the driver's door IIRC. It does have it's own "place" though. -andy- |
The place I got my starter button from can do the strakes for £120 + shipping (which can't be too much as they're not that big).
Obviously if we got a few people together that could come down (certainly the shipping would be cheaper split between more people). I'll ask for a quote for 5 sets for example and see what they come back with. -andy- |
