Drifting tyres 101 please help

Hey guys I was just wondering what would be a good tire size be for (front) 17x8 +25 et (rear)17x9.5 +25 et wheel for drifting? Our cars lack torque and hp, a drifter friend of mine recommended using a 215/45/17 setup all the way around. A smaller contact patch = easier to wheel spin/drift. I'm abit on the fence with that size, given our stock size is 225/45/18 18x8 +50et, my concern is that the different tire sizes may throw something off or give me abs/traction control issues. should I try to match the diameter of stock height ? I've been searching different forums for answer but maybe someone here with an rx8 has some insight for tire sizes for a 17" wheel specifically for drifting. getting ready for gym khana in san diego :) :yelrotflm

if your pretty much stock power, I would suggest running a 225 up front and 215 or 225 in rear (your choice). It sounds like ur just beginning, so you won't notice the difference honestly between a 215 and 225. Have fun though!

And its not so much tire size (to a certain extent) but more the actual tire your using. Nexen's fuckin blow dick, and maxxis' are the tits. Maxxis' are expensive however, but the tread wear is so good that it almost equates to the wear of 2 shitty tires (honestly) If your workin with a budget, I would recommend Summotimo's or Kenda's, they are both cheap and for the money you can't complain.

I always run federals in the rear 225/45's (45psi), and I run falken azenis 615 235/45's for the front

Thats too much tire 215s or 225s is what you want to break traction easier

Dang! That's a bit excessive. How much psi are you running though?

@YboTs13 it's not too bad i have a hydro hand brake, plus kicking the clutch breaks it loose :D

@chuckynorris 32Psi all alround.

Im thinking of running 245 laterrr it will make it easier :fingersx:

with rx8's torque, you need no wider than 225 tires to be able to hold a continuous drift. try 205.
when you drifting, grip is your enemy. at least the rear.
