It looks like we are going to be meeting up with the folks from Canada and NE Thursday as they come through VA too....
This could end up being epic! That route would work ok for us.... we could meet at I64 and I81 I think...

I try to avoid that way. Run 58 to I-85 to I-40. Little more fun when you run the mountains right after Ashville. About the same distance either way. Anywhere from 8 to 10 hours depending on how long it takes to get out of Hampton Roads. Now you can take some side roads from 40 down in to the dragon. Runs through the national forest and is a sweet ride. Little longer like 11 to 12 hours.

Give me a minute to google. Sorry I used old school maps when I went from the dragon back to Virginia. But from Hampton roads you can take two ways. Go up 64 to 81 or take state 58 straight over to 85 and down to 40. It close to the same distance. Like twenty miles or something for me to my house. Now the trek down to the dragon from I-40 was state roads etc straight through the Nattahalla forest. Nice ride when I did a few years ago.

Try this and see if it works. Just used my house address and to the store/hotel in Deals Gap. It give you the route I normally take back. I live in Oak Ridge so I normally just stay on 40 straight home. So I don't know where everyone is staying in the area but I know I will stay at Mom's since its about 30 to 40 minutes from the Dragon.

Ok, now I see the problem. That route looks really nice driving-wise, but we wouldn't be able to meet with anyone else since they would all be buzzing by Richmond or farther west on 81.
May have to just stick with Hampton Roads guys then, that seems way shorter.
