ON Broken DRL module

If you bought a new DRL module then please send me your broken one!

I am able to repair them but need to be able to exchange a working one for each defective unit I receive.

As compensation, next time you need your DRL unit replaced you'll get free repair.

Mine is probably broken. DRLs never worked since I bought the car, not sure why. Not that I care, I don't want DRLs anyways. I can pull it out if and check if you tell me what to look for.

Just curious, are you replacing the relays on the DRL with the exact same ones that are soldered onto the PCB? Or are you using higher current ones that you mount externally, say on the box that covers the PCB, and running wires onto the PCB?

This is a quick and dirty replacement just to offer people a low cost way to deal with failed modules.

The relays handle more than enough current in normal operation but I believe there is a conflict right at the switching point... I need to investigate a bit more.
There was considerable evidence of arcing on the contacts.

IIRC the relays are encased in colored plastic. Did you have to cut the plastic encasing one of the relays to see the arcing on the contacts?

The relay has a black plastic cover, then foam, then some redistribution metal, then another relay with a plastic cover... then the contacts... I have a picture of those somewhere.
This is some attempt to silence the relay according to the datasheet...?
My relays had arced to the point that they had no continuity through the normally closed contacts

Thanks for the pic! It's been a while since I looked at my DRL module and forgot what the relays looked like. Looking back on the photos I took of my DRL module, I now remember. I did go as far as looking for replacement relays at one time, but the place I found that sold them would only sell me 50 relays as a minimum.

Did you find a place that would sell only 2? If so, would you be willing to PM me as to who they are? OR, would you be willing to sell me 2 directly? I'm located in BC. I would of course pay you for your efforts!

I have a suspected dead DRL module.
No DRL's, no Highbeams.
Is it possible to "fix" the module to allow the high beams to operate, but avoid use of the DRL's?

Yes!

You eliminate the relays and hard wire some of the paths...

I suppose a little more thought would create some additional possibilities.

I need to get mine done to certify the new rx8. Still doing this? Where are you in Canada?

Thanks
