Who going to DGRR this year!

Who going to DGRR this year! 10th anniversary
My wife and I are going then driving thru to the Keys.
The cabin booked & registered. And I'm taking the 8.

Boeuf 02-19-2014 07:59 PM

Not this year. Last year was the first and last DGRR for me. The time of year they hold it sucks. The weather is shitty and Nantahalla Village is a bad venue. I love Deals Gap and I'll go again but not for DGRR unless they move it a month or two later and shift it to Fontana Village.

That being said, have a great time Rick!

Redshift 02-20-2014 12:26 PM

We've enjoyed it when we've gone before, and plan to go again, but won't make it this year. She loves the event, but, she won't go for going to DGRR the same weekend we are supposed to leave for our destination wedding.

Have the wedding in N.C. all rotards RSVP
Not a great Canadian contingent this year so far, but after this winter people will want to just get away. 7 forum has a half a dozen so far, two or three stay with me & my better half. Leaving on the monday for a road trip to the Keys with the wife after DGRR. (That's why she put up with all the guys)

Neo 02-20-2014 06:24 PM

I would love to go again, but the time of year they hold it blows.
Besides, this year I'm hoping to make it to 7stock. :)

Honestly, it had been discussed. But, all of the invites were sent out for the wedding and deposits paid in Barbados before they firmed up the DGRR dates.

Hopefully next year. She wants to take her Turbo convertible down.

That thought had crossed my mind before...

What if we organize a Canadian road trip later in the year, regardless of the American April event. I barely get a chance to knock the cobb webs off my car and I have to push it 1000Km. And it's tornado season in the spring.
Maybe the Canucks should descend on the Dragon in the Autumn, when the leaves change colours. The mountains would look awesome.

And the DGRR chooses the Nantahala Mountain Resort, which doesn't have room for everyone to stay, and not enough parking for the car show. I usually have to stay off site, anyways. And Reckless has found a nicer cabin for less money that is closer to the Dragon anyways.

On one hand, I like putting a face to a avatar that I see on the forum, and the big variety of rotary cars. But I actually avoid driving the Gap because it is so congested. I prefer early mornings when it is quiet. Or maybe a different time of year would provide more opportunity and enjoyment.

Boeuf 03-02-2014 05:16 PM

When we went last year I rented a 4 bedroom cabin at Fontana Village which is a much better venue than Nantahalla. There is a massive amount of parking and you're only 2 minutes away from The Dragon. If you go to Fontana during the summer months they have a pool with a lazy river as well which is nice especially if the significant other doesn't like driving.

Boeuf 03-02-2014 05:21 PM

I've also been many other times of year, a few times in July with Miatas at the Gap and a few other times in May, August and September months with a few buddies.
I don't want to sound bad but the worst trip was the DGRR. The temps are ok during the day but early morning and night the temps drop to zero. Also, I didn't see that many rotaries driving around and the few I did see were slow as ass. Most of the rotary guys seemed happy just to park their cars in the tiny Nantahalla lot.

Probably my last year, some of us leaving early Thursday to do the Blue Ridge Parkway again.
Check In 3:00 Friday so we have lots of time, as long as no tornado's or snowstorms, fingers crossed.
Everyone expect Glen will receive a small refund depending on how the Canuck Buck holds up, $10 - $15 CAD.
Good Group can't wait!

Date and venue sucks, my last year for sure. Still want to do Pikes Peak(another road on the bucket list!) and than on to LALA Land for Stock7 and the coastal highway maybe next year.:dunno:

Derry, sounds good to me, Waynesboro is where we stopped one of the times we did this route. Peace Bridge DF parking lot 6-7:00 am, earlier the better. At border crossing @ 7 at the latest, be there or be square.

A huge thank you to G _man for all his help getting my car up and running the night before I left.

Sorry you couldn't make it after all that hard work you put into your car all winter. it would have been the cleanest looking R3 there.

Wanted to thank my fellow Canadians who attended for a great weekend at DGRR ......cant say I like the drive to get there and back but the experience of driving the Dragon's tail was well worth it. Special thanks to Scottish#1 for showing my son and I around....Much appreciated.

No problem it was my pleasure. I had lots of fun and actually enjoyed flyin solo this year.

A big thanks to Rick for organizing this. It probably would have never have happened this year if Rick didn't lead the charge.

It was a great weekend hanging out with you guys and the weather was awesome this year.

Yes, a wonderful weekend. Sad to be back, driving home in the drizzling ran.

I love telling people I wore shorts and t-shirts all weekend. And hot tubbing at the end of the day.

Ian asked me if I will be returning again next year, and the answer is yes.
Sure, it is a long drive there and a long drive back.
But there are so many interesting roads and highways. Some I want to do again and some I still need to explore. To me, the Tail of the Dragon is just a taste of it. I've already planned out new routes for next year.
RXeckless, that cabin was a real find. Nice work. Thanks for organizing. Thank Chris for sharing space with us.

FYI, I kept my receipts and added them up:
Food - $85
Drinks - $85
Lodging - $160
Gasoline - $310

For those who went this year, did you have similar costs?

For those who plan to go next year, budget accordingly.

Yup I was around the 7 tanks of gas for the weekend so about $400 or so on gas.

RXeckless 05-04-2014 07:18 AM

Thanks, Dougie. Too bad you couldn't stay the extra day, I just got home from the keys last evening with no malfunctions at all. Only exception was nailing a couple of retreads that are numerous on the highway down there. Left early because of high cost of everything and way more commercial than the last time.

Chris said the best part of the trip was the cabin time and wants to go back again as well. So maybe next year or just go down for no reason at all. After our journey thru many eastern states by far North Carolina, Tennessee are my favourites for the great people and roads!
