Where is the closest track??
 
I really want to see what my 1/4 mile time is, does anyone know what the closest place is to test it?

go to cayuga this saturday, its actually a CSCS weekend. they have a drag strip, meter and timer. I think that might be the most suitable for you if you're looking for your 1/4 mile time... checkout www.torontomotorsportspark.com (track site) and www.cscs.ca (event site).

Why not drive it on a road race track, you will probably have a lot more fun . . . In my mind the car is far more about overall handling than straight line performance. There is a lapping day this Friday (7th) at Shannonville, $180 if spots are still available, I am not going this time. The back straight at Shannonville is the 1/4 mile track so you can see how fast you can get going from a rolling start before having to brake for the corner at the end :-) PM me if you are interested and I will try to dig up the email I got from the organizers, it's a good group, lots of driving time, controlled passing and generally well organized.

If you ever do decide to take it to a real track, Mosport is hard to beat. Awesome, awesome track. Very challenging, and pretty scary at times. I highly recommend it. Just close your eyes, turn the wheel and pray on turn 2! :D

for those of us in Calgary, the closest track is Race City Speedway. Your question didn't specify "closest" to where, so you left us all to guess.

I suppose we can assume you're from Barrie, but would you mind putting your location in the "Location" field in your profile? That makes it easier to help with all sorts of questions.

Turn 2 isn't as scary as 5a-5b. :)

5a? the wall of asphalt? haha. I walked the track before I ever set tire on it, and that turn was definitely freaky. straight up!! But now that turn is my bitch! :p I love making 5b passes.

Here is part of a neat little article about Mosport from the C6-R ALMS team

BOWMANVILLE, Ont. - Like singer Aretha Franklin, Mosport International Raceway demands respect. That's R-E-S-P-E-C-T. It's the fastest track on the American Le Mans Series circuit, a course that takes a driver's breath away.

Ask Ron Fellows, the acknowledged master of Mosport. The Canadian ace began his racing career at the Ontario track nearly 30 years ago. He's still in awe of this 2.46-mile circuit.

"Mosport is one place where you never feel you have enough laps," Fellows said. "It has long, fast corners, and no place to go if you make a mistake. You give that track some respect."

"When we begin a race weekend at Mosport and my engineer asks what we need to go faster, I just tell him, 'More laps. The car's fine, but the driver has to get a little braver.'"

A test of both machine and mettle, Mosport offers unique rewards.

"There's not a driver in the paddock who doesn't like racing there," Fellows declared. "The corners are fast and you can sink your teeth into the place. Niki Lauda (three-time Formula 1 champion) said that Turns 4-5-6 are the most challenging and difficult combination to get right among all the tracks in the world he'd raced on."

So how does Mosport match up with the great European circuits?

"It's an old-style track that hasn't been sanitized with chicanes," said Oliver Gavin, who teamed with Olivier Beretta to win at Mosport last year. "It may not be the safest track, but it's so much fun to drive around that every driver gets out of the car with a huge grin on his face.

"Turn 2 is a big corner because you are approaching quickly in fifth gear, braking and turning as you're going over a crest," he explained. "It's quite daunting because when you go over the crest, the laws of physics take over and you become a passenger. Mosport is definitely one of those tracks give a driver a great reward for pushing that little bit harder."

Beretta agreed: "From now to the end of the season, we are running on good, fast tracks," he said. "Mosport is one of the best in the ALMS championship because there are big differences in elevation, fast corners and long straights. It will suit the Corvette C6.R very well."

If you want to get some instruction/coaching at these tracks, the Saab Club runs 3-4 schools per year at Shannonville, a 2-mile multi-layout track on flat terrain, virtually no guard rails; good bunch of people with laid back approach. http://computer-ease.com/socci/

For Mosport, the BMW club now welcomes all comers and runs 2-day schools;pretty formal attmosphere but probably necessary at Mosport. As the article says, very fast track and you'll hit a wall if you screw up.

I've done the mosport rider development track, both shannonville tracks and cayuga (now TMP) on motorcycles...kinda afraid of the mosport big track. If you go down there, it'll likely be serious.

Still, will do it someday, fear is addictive after all. Maybe the car is the way to do it. But I'm getting older, and more fearfull of other track riders/drivers with each passing year...seen some bonehead things.

Remember, your $40 thou. car / beloved bike is on the line at track days.

The closet place is in pickering on the dyno there, it is accurate to a couple of hundreths of a second! PM me for details.

Just a warning about Mosport. I have been lapping/racing there since 1995 and every lapping day and every race day a rookie has stuffed his car into a wall. Some advise from an instructor/racer----go to Shannonville and learn before you go to the big track at Mosport.

Definitely go to Shannonville FIRST if you've not run a course before. There aren't any elevation changes, the track is quite nicely laid out (and taken care of) and you have the choice of running a shorter or longer course, depending on who else is running that day. Local car groups rent out the track on a daily basis, so it's best to scout around your area - I'm guess that mikefrombarrie lives in Barrie, Ontario, so that makes Shannonville an easy starting point. The 1/4 mile there is meh. No run-off.

Mosport is awesome, and the more power you have, the better. One of the local Porsche clubs goes there on a regular basis; maybe the GTA RX-8 group should make a day of it!

Mosport is very expensive to rent and some of the clubs, like Porsche do not welcome anyone without one of their marque. I help out instructing at the Ferrari days and their attendance is down to the point where they've had to allow 'friends and family' to run non-Ferraris to help pay the rent.
That's why I mentioned the BMW club - they have gone away from BMW-only restrictions and they have weekend events. Most other clubs run on weekdays (if that's an issue)
There are other lapping days, but, from what I've heard, the control of the event is more "casual", so one should proceed with caution.
