starting RX-8 at minus 10 and colder

I'm in Montreal,Qc. When starting my 8 at minus 10 and colder the motor is reving up at 4000rpm for about 20 to 30 seconds, after is dropping back to 2000rpm The sound is howful. It's like a bird stuck in the rotor. I never saw a motor running so wild because it's cold. Any hint ?
thanks

That's normal behavior. It's the PCM's way of protecting the engine and to get the temperature up.

If it bugs you that much ... you can give the gas pedal a little blip, that will allow the revs to come back down to ~1000.

My used to do the same thing with the M Flash, but now not more than 2,000 RPM with the "R" flash. Mind you, we only had 3 or 4 days where it went to -11, so can't be 100% sure just yet.

Me too....

Yeah, mine used to do that with the M flash, and it hasn't done it (so far) with the new R flash.

The flash is a part of the fuel tank recall - don't go home without it!

Interesting - I had the fuel tank recall done in the early fall, but my car has done this anyways - but only when it is really cold (-20 degrees).

Same here. I just got my car in September, and the tag showing the recall was performed was on the car when I got it. One very cold morning a few weeks ago it revved to 4000+ for a couple of minutes when I started it. I looked on this forum and saw that a lot of people have experienced the same thing, so I'm not too concerned about it.

I had the same concerns too during cold weather.
My car was doing the exact same thing.......

Now, I think it's kinda cool........it's like the car is growling in the morning just getting outta bed!
