Rust proofing vs. undercoating.

Hey guys,

Which one is better for the car? Or is it better to get both? I'm located in Vancouver and not sure if I should even have it done. Most of the guys on Revscene say it's not necessary because the factory undercoating and rustproofing is good enough for our climate, while others swear by it. I guess I'm a little worried about rust forming in the rear quarter panel as it was recently repaired at a body shop.

Also, anyone in the GVRD dealt with Bashir's Auto Cosmetics in Richmond? They seem to be the popular place do get this stuff done. Any other places you guys recommend?

Well, found out today that Bashir's uses a wax based product for rustproofing. I did some research and found wax isn't very good... over time, it will crack, allowing moisture to penetrate and wax pieces can possibly clog drain holes. I guess an oil/polymer based product is the better choice...?

Anyone recommend some good rustproofing/undercoating places in the Vancouver area? I'd prefer a place that does not drill holes.

TIA.

Did both when new (wax rustproof and undercoat), not a speck of rust 3 years in and I drive it in the winter. It's quieter too. Gets inspected every year free too.

It's the oil spraying guys who say all that about the wax cracking and stuff. Fact is, manufacturers esp. on high end cars never oil spray, they wax.

Did oil spraying before...for those that don't know your car gets soaked in the stuff...and I've had one to many electronics go on previous cars so I supect it, plus it ate away the adhesives that held the moulding in a previous car. But it does keep the rust away...if you don't mind the holes and the mess.

I wouldn't trust the electric box that they're also using now.

Mazda offering me $500.00 for lifetime warranty on their sym-tech product, non-drip one time application. I carefully researched Krown, looked at friends' cars who had it and couldn't believe all the holes drilled and black oily mess everywhere! I just can't bring myself to do that every year to my RX8! Any thoughts on the dealer sym-tech product with lifetime warranty for $500.?? Thanks!!

Read details of that lifetime warranty. Things like that tend to come with fineprint.

Also, personally I prefer oily mess to snow, salt and rust.
