Rotary Entries @ 24 of Daytona
12:00 starting air time on Speed
3 RX-8's: Goldin Bros. (GT specific RX-8 builder) Team Spencer (brief P2 ALMS stint) Speedsource (S.Tremblay, not sure what they've done for an entry in GT, they usually run ST in the Cup's underseries) |
The Speedsource GT car is Riley & Scott tube chassis race car powered by a Peripheral Port 13B. The body is a carbon fibre skin that has the silhouette of a RX-8. Last season they ran a stock chassis RX-8 in the ST class, which they are also competing in again. The Daytona prototypes and the GT cars run the Rolex series which is the 24hrs etc. The GS and ST cars run Grand-Am Cup series which are 3 hour races using stock chassis cars. If you go to their website www.speedsourceinc.com a few of the ST cars are for sale!

Thats real cool to see it racing, I love the video with the 8 leading the iconic 911's. Shows the rotary can still compete! Too bad they had too many problems at the end, but it was their first year so its to be expected.

Wrap up:
Goldin car - 48 laps DNF Spencer/Mandeville - 101 laps DNF Speedsource - 284 laps DNF (10hrs 15mins elapsed) Looking at the times though Pobst's (GT class winner) fastest lap was a 1:54.8 while the Speedsource car was 1:54.4 The car did have the speed by the looks of it to be competitive. If anybody has a blow by blow on the timeline of circumstances and incidents for SS RX-8, please offer it up. |
I love that event. Nice to see rotaries out having fun. Funny thing was that I saw the race last year, but completely ignored the rotaries, not having purchased the RX-8 yet. Drooling all over the Audis, I was.
